MINNESOTA The Metropolitan Council, a regional planning agency serving the Twin Cities, is planning to build an 11-mile-long light-rail line connecting Minneapolis and St. Paul. The council expects to award the first major contract, the Civil East Package, worth $232 million, on June 23. The contract will include laying seven miles of track, relocating utilities, reconstructing streets and sidewalks, building 14 stations and tearing down the Bremer Bank building. Contracts for the western portion of the line— including an operations-and-maintenance center and a fare collection system—will be awarded later this year. ALASKA Ketchikan Gateway Borough has selected Rise Alaska to provide project management services for the Ketchikan Aquatic Center. The project includes a two-story, 35,000-sq-ft complex with an eight-lane main lap pool as well as a diving well, a separate, 3,150-sq-ft warm-water pool and a recreational slide structure. CALIFORNIA Bernards Construction Management has been selected by the City of Atascadero to provide construction and project management services for the rehabilitation of its historic City Hall. The project includes repairing damage from the 2003 San Simeon earthquake as well as abatement of hazardous materials. The construction cost is $35 million. FLORIDA Broward County has selected Weitz to provide construction project management services for a new civil/family courthouse. The project includes a 17-story, 675,000-sq-ft building and a 120-space parking lot. The work includes serving as the owner’s representative during the construction phase. FLORIDA The County of Lee has selected David Douglas Associates Inc. to provide design services for the grade-separated intersection of Veterans Parkway and Santa Barbara Boulevard in Cape Coral. The project includes right-of-way mapping, environmental permitting, utility coordination and design of a toll-optional “queue jump” with an electronic toll gantry. NEW YORK Brookhaven National Laboratories has selected the architecture team of Bergmann Associates and EYP (Einhorn Yaffee and Prescott) for the renovation of its physics and chemistry buildings in Upton. The buildings total 80,000 sq ft. All mechanical and electrical systems will be replaced and the laboratory spaces completely redesigned. OREGON Oregon State University has picked Mahlum Architects to provide design services for the new, 180,000-sq-ft International Student Residence Hall in Corvallis. PENNSYLVANIA The U.S. General Services Administration has awarded a $23.8-million contract to Grunley Construction Co. Inc. to renovate the exterior of the U.S. Custom House in Philadelphia. The project includes masonry restoration, repair/replacement of the windows, a new “green” roof, replacement of the tower lighting with energy-efficient fixtures and a high-efficiency boiler. SOUTH CAROLINA Lancaster County has awarded KBR’s Building Group a $25-million contract to build the new Lancaster County Courthouse in Lancaster.
