KENTUCKY The Kentucky Dept. of Fish and Wildlife Resources has awarded a $3.2-million stream-restoration design project to AMEC, the largest such contract ever awarded by the agency. The project covers the restoration and enhancement of Puncheon Creek and Fishing Creek and their tributaries in central Kentucky. The contract calls for AMEC to perform data collection, project design, construction inspection and oversight as well as coordination with the state’s Historic Preservation Office. The majority of the work will focus on Puncheon Creek, where severe erosion is causing landslides and lowering the quality of the water. AMEC will lead the design of channels to redirect and slow the stream’s flow, as well as direct the placement of wide strips of trees to combat the erosion. ALASKA Watterson Construction was awarded a $21-million firm-fixed price contract for the construction of barracks facilities at Fort Wainwright. CALIFORNIA The Naval Facilities Engineering Command, Southwest District, has awarded a $14.2-million firm fixed-price task order under a previously awarded multiple award construction contract to Harper Construction Co. for the design, repair and renovation of a helicopter hanger building. The Helicopter Hanger Building 1474 at Naval Base Coronado is a two-story, steel-frame building that provides support for three helicopter squadrons. The contract calls for much-needed repairs and expansion for a severely deteriorated structure. Work includes finish upgrades, replacement of the roof membrane system, repair of existing power systems and HVAC installation and upgrades. MARYLAND Haskell Co. is being awarded a $23-million firm fixed-price contract by the Naval Facilities Engineering Command, Mid-Atlantic, for the design and construction of a barracks facility at Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point. The 180-room facility will have a capacity of 348 persons. The project has an expected completion date of April 2011. Contract funds will not expire at the end of the year. MARYLAND Hensel Phelps Co. was awarded a $38.5-million firm-fixed price contract by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for the construction of a 178,000sq-ft, multistory media production facility for the Defense Media Activity at Fort George C. Meade. The facility will provide space for 660 personnel, and has an expected completion date of March, 2011. MICHIGAN The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Louisville District, awarded a $50-million firm fixed-price contract to Granger Construction Co. for the design and construction of an administrative facility and parking structure at U.S. Army Garrison, Detroit Arsenal, in Warren. Construction of the 230,000-sq-ft administrative office will include the integration of an intrusion-detection system, mass-notification system and integration into central systems. Design will incorporate anti-terrorism measures, including standoff from roads and vehicle unloading areas as well as bollards and heavy landscaping to prevent access. Work on the 645,000-sq-ft parking structure also will include related site work, curbs, gutters and stormwater management systems. The project has an expected completion date of March, 2011. NORTH CAROLINA The North Carolina Dept. of Transportation has awarded a $13.6-million contract to Yates Construction Co. for the completion of a road-widening project in Burlington. The Mebane St. widening project had previously stalled, and is now being funded entirely by an infusion of funding from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. The project covers widening of Melbane St. from two lanes to four lanes along a 2.6-mile stretch between Huffman Mill Rd. and Chapel Hill Rd. Yates Construction Co. PENNSYLVANIA The Reading Parking Authority awarded a $10-million general construction contract to Perroto Builders for a 776-space, seven-story parking garage across from the future sight of the Sovereign Center convention center on Penn St. in Reading. The parking garage will be adjacent to the planned seven-story DoubleTree hotel-restuarant complex, which is currently set to have 218 rooms. The parking garage is the first construction contract awarded related to the planned $67-million convention center project. In addition to the parking garage, the contract calls for sidewalk repair and reconstruction with site light pole installation. Work is expected to begin in June. TEXAS The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers awarded a $17.9-million design-build contract to MCC/Catamount Constructors LLC for a medical field training complex at Camp Bullis. The complex will be comprised of 17 one-story buildings, most of which are pre-engineered. They include two 4,800-sq-ft general instruction buildings, four 250-person, 2,800-sq-ft dormitories, three 2,800-sq-ft multipurpose buildings, one 4,800-sq-ft administrative building, one 10,000-sq-ft warehouse building, one 3,000-sq-ft dining facility, as well as latrine buildings. The complex is intended to allow Army personnel to apply their medical training and skills in an outdoor environment. TEXAS Innovative Technical Solutions Inc. was awarded a $14.9-million contract by the Army Corps of Engineers to build the fifth and final medical instructional facility of the new Medical Education and Training Campus at Fort Sam Houston. The three-story, 47,000-sq-ft facility will have a structural-steel frame and will house instructional and administrative spaces, as well as automation-aided classrooms and laboratories. TEXAS The Air Force Center for Engineering and the Environment at Brooks City-Base has awarded a $10.2-million contract to Toltest Inc. toward the construction of an Intelligence Operations Center at Lackland Air Force Base. The 40,000-sq-ft facility will be used by the Air Force to support existing units that monitor and assess its telecommunications and computer systems. This contract was awarded as part of the Dept. of Defense’s Base Realignment and Closure program for the San Antonio area. This and other contracts are a part of as many as 29 contracts worth more than $700 million in the BRAC program that are scheduled to be awarded for this fiscal year. VIRGINIA Ironbridge Construction Inc. was awarded a $9.5-million firm fixed-price contract by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for the construction of a 34,000-sq-ft dining facility for enlisted personnel at Fort Lee. The contract covers the initial site work, design of the dining facility, overall construction of the building, complete interior finishes and survey equipment, including the exercised option to provide and install the required furniture and décor items. WASHINGTON 4/9 City of Redmond, City Hall 15670 NE 85th St. Redmond, 98052-3580, bridge construction. The project calls for the construction of a 480-ft offset lid bridge across State Route 520 connecting NE 36th St. to NE 31st St. in Redmond. The bridge would also provide a direct link between the main campus of Microsoft Corp.’s headquarters and its emerging west campus on the other side of State Route 520. The bridge would have two traffic lanes, a bike lane and a pedestrian walkway. This contract also covers the revision of traffic on State Route 520, as well as property restoration, traffic roundabout, street lighting, storm drains, water main, sanitary sewer, retaining walls and assorted site work. The contract is estimated between $25 million and $32 million. Funding for the project is provided by $11 million from the region’s portion of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, assorted local funds and Microsoft Corp., which is to provide $36.5 million, roughly half of the project’s total estimated cost.
