Toyota Motor Corp. said on June 17 it is resuming construction of its $1.3-billion manufacturing plant in Blue Springs, Miss. Work, which had been indefinitely suspended since December 2008 at the 1.9-million-sq-ft factory, was mostly completed. The remaining project will be new painting facilities, says a spokeswoman. Toyota is expected to hire 2,000 production workers to manufacture 150,000 cars annually. Another 2,000 jobs are projected for suppliers and vendors. Unemployment in the area has averaged about 11%, slightly above the state average.
