South Central Construction's annual Best Of competition in Louisiana recognizes construction and design excellence from projects across the state. An independent jury of industry experts in design and construction judged 45 nominated projects in 11 categories.
Judges included:
Barry Lacy and Richey Charoenpap, both of the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development; Charles Currier of BASF: Ann Ellis of Milton Womack Contractor; Wesley Gifford of Woodrow Wilson Construction Co.; Robert McKinney and Gordon Brooks, both of the University of Louisiana – Lafayette; and Tom Sofranko of Louisiana State University.
Entries were judged on the following criteria: solutions to challenges; project management, innovation, client service, safety and design unity. Eligible projects had to be located within Louisiana and completed between Sept. 1, 2007, and Aug. 31, 2008.

OfficeChevron Northpark
The $70.7 million Class-A Chevron Northpark office building in Covington, La., serves as the headquarters for Chevron North America Exploration and Production Co.'s Gulf of Mexico Business Unit. Chevron Northpark is the first LEED Gold Certified project for both Chevron and Louisiana. The project also set a record as the state’s largest tilt-wall project, with panels weighing 220,000 pounds and measuring 69 ft 11.75 in. tall. Health CareBaton Rouge General Medical Center
In December 2004, Milton J. Womack Inc. began a $47 million expansion and renovation to the Baton Rouge General Medical Center's Bluebonnet campus in Baton Rouge, La. Renovation/RestorationCity-Brooks Community Park
Renovations to this Baton Rouge park included the creation of new multi-use features and improvement of the park's connections to neighboring communities. With extensive public input, the master plan for redevelopment of the historic park was completed. The redesign sought to preserve the intent of the original designers while updating the facilities to meet the community's current needs. GovernmentBogalusa Readiness Center
This project was originally bid with a set of 35% documents prepared by an architect selected by the Louisiana Army National Guard. The project consisted of a main building, a maintenance training bay, unheated storage building, flammable waste building and a wash rack. From the award of the project, the design team took the 35% drawings, completed the building design and submitted 50%, 95% and 100% documents for review and approval throughout the construction. Civil/Public WorksHarvey Canal Sector Gates
This permanent sector gate structure was built to prevent storm surge from the Gulf of Mexico from entering the Harvey Canal north of the Lapalco Boulevard bridge. Although the project was contracted and started prior to August 2005, the storm surge from hurricanes Katrina and Rita intensified the attention paid to protection of the canal structures from storm surge, especially on the west bank of the Mississippi River near the Harvey Canal. When the Denham Springs Economic Development District needed a company to convert an existing tract of land surrounding the Bass Pro Shop building into parking lots and ancillary site improvements, Durr Heavy Construction LLC was the company chosen. Storm drainage, soil cement, concrete curb and gutters, concrete truckwells, and asphalt paving were only a few of the items Durr undertook on this new development. The Veterans Memorial Project was a chance for one Louisiana Parish to honor the courageous men and women who have served this country over the past century and those who continue to serve.
The mission of the project was to create a monument that required the visitor and the normal vehicular traffic of the downtown site to take notice.
