California Construction recently recognized the winners of its Best of 2008 awards program in Northern California.
The competition annually recognizes construction and design excellence in Northern California. An independent jury of industry experts in design and construction judged more than 65 nominated projects in 14 categories.
This year's Northern California judges included:
Steve Gallagher, managing director, Tishman Speyer; Lori Reed, director of marketing and communications, American Institute of Architects, California Council; Laura Rodormer, division manager, Green Consulting Services, Swinerton Management and Consulting; Randy Ruby, director of labor relations, Engineering and Utility Contractors Association; Kirsten Ritchie, director of sustainable design, Gensler; and Simin Naaseh, president and CEO, Forell/Elsesser Engineers.
Eligible projects must have been completed between September 1, 2007 and September 1, 2008. Judging criteria included project management, overcoming challenges of the job, overall excellence in architectural or engineering design, innovation, safety and the contribution to the community and/or the construction industry, among other criteria.

Outstanding Architectural DesignCathedral of Christ the Light
The soaring and luminous Cathedral of Christ the Light consists of a one-of-a-kind sanctuary for 1,500 worshipers, a mausoleum, conference and residential facilities, office and retail spaces, and a subterranean parking garage.
Built to last for centuries, the cathedral’s unique, oval-shaped structure has been engineered to withstand a 1,000-year earthquake and is covered by 1,028 panes of fritted, transparent glass.
