2008 Best of Awards

Mid-Atlantic Construction magazine's annual awards competition showcases the best projects built in Washington, D.C., Virginia, Maryland, Delaware and eastern Pennsylvania. An independent jury of leaders from the design and construction industries chose to honor 38 projects completed in 2008.

Judges for the Best of 2008 program included:
Patrick Burns, PE, Vice President, Mortenson Construction; Wayne Harrell, Senior Project Manager, KBS; Edward Hollander III, PE, Principal and Construction Manager, American Civil Construction; Eric Liebmann, AIA, Managing Principal and as Director of Design, WDG Architecture; Bob Tierney, Director of Design for Hospitality, Baskervill.

The jury focused on those projects that best achieved the established goals of the project team; overcame significant challenges; adopted innovative approaches; and exhibited exceptional teamwork. Jurors were allowed to award one Project of the Year per category and multiple Awards of Merit.

Sports & EntertainmentNationals Park
The Nationals Park project team was tasked with completing this 1.1 million square foot project in just 23 months while meeting aggressive goals for minority hiring and subcontractor participation. Nationals Park was designed to meet LEED certification, and two days prior to Opening Day, the U. S. Green Building Council awarded the facility Silver Certification.

Small Projects (under $5 million)Valley Green Bank, Chestnut Hill
Extensive interior work transformed this former convenience store into a welcoming bank branch. Crews demolished the interior, cut extensively into masonry walls to create window openings, reconditioned existing sidewalks and added new lighting.

RestorationRobert H. Smith Visitor Education Center Historical Renovation
This project involved the preservation of President Lincoln’s cottage and the rehabilitation of a visitors’ education center on the Soldiers’ Home National Monument site near downtown Washington, D.C. Extensive upgrades included new mechanical, electrical and fire alarm systems, as well as the restoration of interior plaster walls and ornamental cornice ceilings.

Park/Site/LandscapingPentagon Memorial
The memorial honoring the victims of the attack on the Pentagon on September 11, 2001, includes 184 individual “Memorial Units” representing each victim killed in the attack. Each unit was finished and polished by hand, requiring more than 100 man-hours of hand work.

InstitutionalNew Library – Morgan State University
Morgan State University’s New Library replaces the existing Soper Library with state-of-the-art, technology based study spaces, learning environments and meeting facilities. The flexible building design allows for spaces to be reconfigured as academic programs change and evolve. High performance energy modeling was used and material specifications were guided by environmentally friendly products.

HospitalityGaylord National Resort and Convention Center
The project team building the $865 million Gaylord National Convention Center along the Potomac River faced a fast-moving schedule, putting in place $30 million a month between Sept. 2006 and its completion this spring. In one of the most aggressive construction schedules undertaken in the region, employees and workers worked around the clock, seven days a week, to meet these commitments.

High-Rise ResidentialGramercy at Metropolitan Park
Phase I of the Gramercy at Metropolitan Park includes 399 apartment units, below-grade parking and retail. The existing overhead power lines had to be relocated underground into a new duct bank. Once crews moved overhead power lines underground, the project team led a series of coordination meetings to come up with a plan to provide temporary power while allowing the installation of the permanent service.

Green Projects The Haverford School
The owner’s decision to seek LEED Gold certification for the construction of the Haverford School’s new Upper School, renovation of its 125-year-old Wilson Hall and reconstruction of its library was made so the space could serve as teaching tool for its students. Materials used included recycled curtainwall glass, certified wood and re-used stone from the original library.

CulturalThe Newseum
The Newseum is a unique and architecturally complex museum that pays homage to the Fourth Estate -- the press. Designed to resemble a newspaper with three sections, the 250,000 square foot museum contains almost every conceivable structural system in both steel and concrete. The structure includes 24 structural systems and 11 exterior wall systems – with 12 types of glass.

OfficeComcast Center
The new 975-ft-tall Comcast Center symbolizes a dramatic turning point in the evolution of Philadelphia’s skyline. The $525 million, 1.4-million-sq-ft tower is the tallest building in Philadelphia and was designed to be the nation’s tallest LEED-certified building. The design includes several post-9/11 elements. A concrete core surrounded by structural steel houses critical systems, elevators and stairs. In the event of an airborne impact, the structural steel is designed to collapse around and outside the core, preserving an escape route for occupants.
