The annual Gold Hard Hat Awards is a competition to determine the best projects completed by Colorado firms in a calendar year. The projects are submitted by firms involved in any aspect of a project.
Judging was done by a panel of industry experts:
Don Gendall of The Weitz Co., Bryan McFarland of Alberta Development Partners, Jeff Pedersen of The Durrant Group, Fred Wolfe of GE Johnson Construction Co., Lauren Evans of Pinyon Environmental and Jeff Cochran of Catamount Constructors.
Projects were selected based on design quality and innovation, craftsmanship, the project¹s contribution to the community and the industry, solution of unique design and construction challenges and overall excellence. The size of the project was not a factor in judging.

WorshipCalvary Episcopal Church
Calvary Episcopal Church was first constructed in Golden in 1879 and is the oldest church in Colorado. In 2000, a building program was established, leading to the construction of the Great Hall on the opposite side of the one-acre site.
In the second phase of the building program, the house between the historic church and the Great Hall was to be demolished to make room for a connecting link between the historic building and the new hall.

TransportationMaroon Creek Bridge
This 670-ft-long, single-cell, cast-in-place balanced cantilever concrete bridge accommodates vehicle, bus and bicycle traffic, with a design that is sensitive to its environment. It mimics the adjacent 1890s vintage railroad trestle. The bridge is the first cast-in-place concrete bridge built in the balanced cantilever segmental method in Colorado since the 70’s. The project team endured severe winter and an overextended labor market, but completed the project within contract time. Various changes to the project allowed for improvements to the bridge while remaining within the original budget. BTE/Atkinson JV Aspen Photo by Terry Shapiro |

The Mile Hi Church expansion is a green project for the Lakewood congregation.
The project required an extraordinary construction and inflation process, resulting in a six-story dome structure. The sanctuary’s monolithic dome is environmentally friendly and energy efficient, taking fewer natural resources to operate than a comparably sized traditional building.
