AEC SYSTEMS CONFERENCE PREVIEW

Seamless Integration

    Technology Forges Forward

AEC systems is an encompassing phrase that refers to technology and tools that work together to seamlessly integrate computerized functions. Simply stated, the intent is to combine systems in order to improve efficiency and performance for firms involved in the built environment. Ideally, AEC systems combine technology to address all phases of a facility’s lifecycle, from design and construction through post-occupancy and long-range facilities maintenance and management. In addition, they support improved communication and collaboration between facility teams and suppliers by providing a common tool kit of design, management and administrative resources.

“These solutions allow organizations to automate business processes through the use of electronic workflows,” states Harold Lloyd, e-business director at KJM & Associates. “By automating business processes, organizations can identify bottlenecks and increase both efficiency and accountability, thereby providing organizations with valuable tools to closely monitor and measure project success throughout the life of a project.”

Professionals involved in AEC systems integration will gather for the 2004 A|E|C SYSTEMS conference, Feb. 17-19 in Orlando. (www.AECSYSTEMS.com). The show will provide exhibits from approximately 250 vendors and offer 65 educational sessions that range from wearable computers to virtual construction and the cost advantages of intelligent buildings. “It’s a whole new show,” states Kim Rogers, marketing manager for Hanley Wood Exhibitions, the firm that acquired the show last year. “Through surveys of previous attendees and input from an industry advisory board, we’ve reinvented the conference,” she says.

Just Released: New Cost Management Software

On Jan. 15, 2004 Atlanta-based U.S. COST released eSuccess Estimator, a new Web-based cost management application.

According to Stephen Williams, U.S. COST product sales manager, eSuccess is the first online application to deliver real-time estimating and cost management. “Unlike traditional applications,” states Williams, “eSuccess offers unlimited access, real-time cost data, simultaneous multi-user access, and collaborative features to improve team communication.”

When data is entered into eSuccess, it is instantly posted and can be viewed and manipulated from any Internet-connected device. Williams says the system users value the product’s “anytime/anywhere accessibility and real-time drill-down information access and reporting.” Details available at www.esuccessestimator.com/.

   Blue Book Continues Centennial Tradition

Since 1913, The Blue Book of Building and Construction has provided the AEC industry with extensive construction information, sorted by both region and category. This year, over 730,000 copies of The Blue Book will be distributed—free of charge—to buyers of construction related products and services nationwide.

“With over 1,000,000 pre-qualified company listings, it is the most comprehensive source of general contractors, subcontractors and suppliers working within the building and construction industry,” states Jeff Fandl, Blue Book editor.

Online, www.thebluebook.com provides regularly updated construction information throughout 58 major U.S. markets. Additionally, the Web site offers free access to the BB-Bid bidding and procurement network and the BidScope project lead system.
