DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA The Center for Strategic and International Studies plans to build a new nine-story, 130,000-sq-ft headquarters building at 1616 Rhode Island Ave. N.W. The local nonprofit institute, which specializes in defense, security and development policy, will be its own developer on the building, with Jones Lange LaSalle serving as the overall project manager and Hickok Cole Architects serving as designer. The new facility, which is estimated to cost $110 million, will feature seven conference rooms that can seat between 20 and 400 people, full in-house catering capabilities, a multistory atrium and much more. The development team is now preparing its submission for Stage II planned-unit- development approval. Completion of the project is expected by 2012. FLORIDA Rockefeller Group Development Corp. has acquired approximately 113 acres and is planning to build a first-class industrial park with more than one million sq ft of distribution space at the former USA International Speedway on Interstate 4 in Lakeland, between Tampa and Orlando. One preliminary plan calls for a 590,200-sq-ft building, a 440,000-sq-ft building and a 120,120-sq-ft building, for a total of 1.15 million sq ft. An alternative configuration replaces the largest and smallest buildings with a 710,000-sq-ft building. RGDC expects to begin development by the first quarter of 2009. MAINE First Wind, formerly known as UPC Wind, plans to file applications with the state late this year or early next year for the Oakfield Wind Energy Project, a facility with approximately 30 wind turbines in the town of Oakfield in Aroostook County. The exact location for the project has not been revealed due to pending lease agreements with landowners and ongoing wind studies, but the nearest turbine would be a least one mile from downtown Oakfield.
