Mexico Design work has begun on a new inpatient tower at the National Cancer Institute (INCan) in Mexico City. The government project has an estimated cost of $181 million and will consist of an inpatient and diagnostic center connected by a multistory atrium to the existing outpatient and research building. Oman Oman Oil Refineries and Petroleum Industries Co. (OPIC) is planning to build a $3.6-billion plastics manufacturing facility adjacent to its facilities in Muscat. The facility will be based around a steam cracker unit and will allow OPIC to produce polypropylene and will add capacity for production of an additional 1 million metric tons of plastic annually. Saudi Arabia A project delivery method is still being determined for the $1.4-billion Jazan Oil Gasification Refinery and Marine Terminal in Jazan Economic City. Previous contractor bids came in over budget and owner Saudi Aramco currently is negotiating a contract with select firms. The project includes construction of a refinery with the capacity to process 400,000 barrels of oil per day, a marine terminal on the Red Sea coast able to handle large oil tankers and an onsite 2,400-MW combined-cycle power plant. Taiwan Planning has begun on a passenger service center at the Port of Kinmen in Taiwan. The estimated $100-million project will combine a transportation terminal with a recreational waterfront park. United Arab Emirates Design work continues on a new water canal in Dubai. The 2.8-kilometer canal will connect the Business Bay district of Dubai with the Arabian Gulf. In addition to construction of the canal, project work will include elevating three major roadways and the relocation of utilities using microtunneling. The first phase of the project calls for construction of a six-lane bridge on Sheikh Zayed Road that will pass over the new canal. Venezuela Planning schematics work is underway on an estimated $1-billion hydropower turbine rehabilitation at the Guri Dam in Bolívar State, Venezuela. The project involves the complete rehabilitation of six turbines at the Guri Dam that have been operating for 50 years. Work will include hydraulic modeling, a hydraulic structures study, engineering design, risk mitigation, procurement and dam-safety management. Qatar A general contractor has been selected for the $2.3-billion Lusail light rail project in Qatar. VINCI Construction will oversee construction of the 20.5-mile rail network, which will consist of four lines with a total of 37 stations. Work on the design-bid-build project includes track-laying, construction of power infrastructure as well as telecommunications and control systems installation. Alsom Transport will provide 35 trains for the project. Initial construction of the Lusail Yellow line will be completed in 2018, with the Green, Red and Purple lines to follow in 2020.
