Chile The Ministry of Public Works plans to construct a record-size suspension bridge over the Chacao Channel. The bridge will connect the island of Chiloé to the Chilean mainland and, when completed, will be the largest suspension bridge in South America. The 8,645-ft-long bridge will comprise two main spans, one 3,461 ft long and the other 3,608 ft long, as well as a 1,246-ft suspended side span. The project's design features three concrete towers consisting of two 589-ft towers and one 527-ft tower. The Chacao Channel bridge will have a minimum vertical clearance of 193 ft, to allow for ship navigation. Construction is expected to begin in early 2015. Hong Kong The Island School will be a 300,000-sq-ft high school situated in the city's Quarry Bay neighborhood. In addition to standard classroom facilities, the project's design calls for an expansive atrium, balconies, gardens and cantilevered facades. The project is valued at $168 million. Kuwait The Kuwait National Petroleum Co. has plans to build the Mina Abdullah (Package 2) Clean Fuels facility, a refinery expansion in the country's southern region. Designed to boost capacity and featuring enhanced environmental controls, the project has an estimated value of $100 million. KNPC's goal is to bring the Mina Abdullah and Mina Al-Ahmadi refineries into compliance with new environmental standards. Kuwait National Petroleum Co., Khaled Anwar Al-Awadhi, P.O. Mexico Owners are still negotiating a site for a planned Holiday Inn Express in the city of Aguascalientes, Mexico. The hotel will have 160 rooms and a swimming pool. Project valuation is currently estimated between $5 million and $10 million. Construction is expected to begin within the next two years. Poland The Lacina Shopping Center in Poznan will be a 1-million-sq-ft retail center with more than 300 shops and 3,300 parking spaces. The project has been valued at $398 million. United Arab Emirates Abu Dhabi Airport is planning to build a new airport terminal between the airport's two runways. The 6.7-million-sq-ft Midfield Terminal will feature 215,000 sq ft of retail space and a 90,000-sq-ft indoor park. The terminal's design includes several sustainable design elements, including high-performance glass and active shading systems to reduce heat loads as well as dry landscaping to reduce water usage. United Kingdom An 11-story mixed-use building project is currently in the planning stages in the Putney district of London. The building will consist of 40 residential units and approximately 11,000 sq ft of office and retail space. An underground parking garage also is planned. A six-story "link block" will connect the building to an existing adjacent apartment building. United Kingdom The National Health Service is planning to build an acute mental health and community hospital in Irvine, North Ayrshire, Scotland. The medical facility will have 206 beds. The project is valued at $78.4 million. Construction is expected to begin in mid-2014, and completion is slated for spring 2016. Venezuela The city government of Caracas has brought on British architect Sir Richard Rogers to design its planned Hugo Chavez Soccer Stadium. The project calls for a 50,000-seat sports stadium within a complex that will include a 45,000-seat baseball stadium. Rogers will oversee the design for both stadiums. The project is part of the expansive, 200-hectare Hugo Chavez Park project, which began construction in 2013. Completion of the soccer stadium is planned for 2015.
