California Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory is planning to build a new second campus in Richmond, at the University of California's Richmond Field Station. The project's initial phase entails the construction of 500,000 sq ft of buildings to house various life-science research institutes, including the fields of biofuels, genetics, cancer research, climate change and energy efficiency. Construction is expected to begin in 2014 and be completed in 2017 or 2018. The project is being designed by Smith Group, and McCarthy Building Cos. is the project manager. Iowa The Alexander Co. is planning to convert the Younkers department-store building in downtown Des Moines into a mixed-use building. The project entails converting the former store at Seventh and Walnut streets into 120 income-restricted apartments with two floors of retail and commercial space. The building's iconic Younkers Tea Room will be restored and leased to an operator. Construction is expected to begin in April 2013 and be completed by June 2014. Kentucky The University of Kentucky is planning to build Haggin Site II, a 332-bed dormitory on the Lexington campus. The project involves the construction of a five-story, 122,000-sq-ft building at 330 Hilltop Ave. Construction is expected to start in June 2013. Messer Construction Co. will serve as the general contractor. EdR (formerly Education Realty Trust) will serve as the developer, providing private-equity financing and managing the dorm after it is completed. The job is valued at $15.2 million. Missouri Branco Enterprises, the construction manager-at-risk, has started construction of a pet-food plant in Joplin. The project entails building a 425,000-sq-ft plant for the Blue Buffalo Co. Ohio The Campbell Soup Co., in partnership with CH4 Biogas LLC, is building the Napoleon Biogas Plant at Campbell's soup, sauce and beverage plant in Napoleon. Processing the organic waste generated by Campbell's plant and area food processors, waste recyclers and dairy farms, the biogas plant will generate methane gas to fuel turbines to produce renewable electricity. The plant will process up to 450 tons of waste per day and produce up to 2.2 MW of electricity. The project has been valued at $10 million. Connecticut 3/14 The University of Connecticut is seeking bidders to build the North Hillside Road extension. The project involves building a new, 3,656-ft-long roadway that will have two 11-ft-wide travel lanes with 5-ft-wide shoulders and an 8-ft-wide sidewalk. U.S. Route 44 will be milled and overlaid for a length of 1,256 ft. An existing portion of North Hillside Road will be restriped to eliminate, for a length of 3,320 ft, on-street parking. The project is valued at between $10 million and $15 million. Arizona 3/15 The Arizona Dept. of Transportation is seeking bidders to carry out a paving project on State Route 86 in Pima County. The project entails roadway excavation and embankment as well as milling, furnishing and placing an aggregate base course, an asphaltic concrete course and a poly-chip seal coat. The entire project is sited within the Tohono O'odham Nation Indian reservation, between mileposts 128.85 and 137.13. The project has been valued at $23 million. Pennsylvania 3/18 The Lower Lackawanna Valley Sanitary Authority is seeking bidders to carry out the expansion and modification of its sewage treatment facility in Duryea. The project entails converting four aeration tanks to the IFAS process, constructing two new aeration tanks and two new settling tanks, constructing three buildings with the installation of chemical-addition feed systems and the installation of a real-time chemical analysis system. Alabama 4/30 The U.S. General Services Administration is requesting proposals from construction management-at-risk firms seeking to build the new U.S. Courthouse-Federal Building in Mobile. The project entails constructing a five-story, 229,000-sq-ft building as well as a 50-space interior parking garage and a 50-space exterior parking lot. The courthouse will contain seven courtrooms and 11 judges' chambers. The project has been valued at between $70 million and $80 million.
