Arizona The Arizona Dept. of Administration currently is evaluating proposals from firms seeking to design a new 500-bed maximum-security addition to the Lewis Prison at the Arizona State Prison Complex Eyman in Florence, south of Buckeye. Designs for the maximum-security unit will be modeled on Arrington Watkins Architects' "Browning prototype." The project also will include an expansion of the prison's wastewater treatment facility as well as an additional percolation pond. Delaware Cabela's, an outdoor retailer, is planning to build a new store in Christiana. The project entails the construction of a 110,000-sq-ft building, adjacent to Christiana Mall along Stanton Christiana Road near Interstate 95. In keeping with the company's trademark style, the store's exterior will feature log construction, stonework, wood siding and metal roofing. Construction is expected to begin in 2013 and be completed in 2014. The value of the project has been estimated at between $15 million and $25 million. Michigan SSP Associates is planning to build Uptown at Bay City, a 43-acre master-planned community along the Saginaw River. The first phase entails three structures: Building C, a hotel; Building M, which will contain ground-floor commercial businesses and, above, office or residential; and Building N, a 105,000-sq-ft office building. California The California Dept. of Transportation has awarded a Granite Construction Co. and MCM Construction Inc. joint venture a $42-million contract to construct a new interchange on Highway 101 at San Juan Road, north of Salinas. Colorado A team comprising Environmental Chemical Corp. and GH Phipps Construction Cos. has started construction of The Center for Character and Leadership Development, a single-story, 46,685-sq-ft building on the campus of the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs. It will contain the Forum, a flexible gathering space for academic and social interaction; a series of break-out, conference and seminar rooms; offices, a library and a ceremonial staircase; and the Honor Board Room, where potential violations of the cadet honor code will be investigated. Designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, it will offer natural ventilation via a 105-ft-tall skylight, radiant heating and cooling, photovoltaic panels, natural lighting and occupancy sensors, all of which will reduce the building's annual energy consumption by nearly 70% over a code-compliant ASHRAE 90.1-2004 baseline model. Construction is expected to be completed by summer 2014. The value of the project has been estimated at between $10 million and $25 million. Florida LandSouth Construction has started construction of Lost Lake Resort Apartments, an 18-acre residential development in Jacksonville. The project entails constructing 16 two- and three-story residential buildings, containing a total of 280 apartments. The job also includes an 18,000-sq-ft clubhouse with a fitness center, basketball court, pool and spa. It was designed by Forum Architecture & Interior Design. New Jersey PSE&G, a utility, has awarded Burns & McDonnell a program-management contract for an underground transmission initiative in the greater Newark, N.J., area. The project comprises six miles of new 230-kilovolt underground transmission line and various improvements at substation connections as well as 14 reconductoring projects. Construction is expected to begin in late 2012 and be completed in 2016. The project's value has been estimated at $500 million. Bid/Proposal Dates

Iowa 12/3 MWH Americas Inc., the project engineer, is seeking bids from general contractors to build the 36.4-MW Red Rock Hydroelectric Project on the Des Moines River in Pella. The project entails building a cofferdam to facilitate the permanent intake structure; deep excavation or tunneling of two water conduits connecting the intake structure with the upstream face of the existing concrete gravity dam; excavation for the powerhouse structure; construction of the cast-in-place reinforced-concrete intake structure and powerhouse; and installation and testing of the owner-supplied Kaplan turbine generators.
