Colorado The University of Colorado at Boulder is planning to build a geosciences laboratory within Research Park on the East Campus. The project entails building a three- to four-story, 83,708-sq-ft wet-lab building. An architect is expected to be selected shortly, and a construction manager-at-risk will be chosen in several months. Construction is expected to start in September 2012 and be completed by May 2014. Missouri Briarcliff Development is planning to build Horizons, a commercial, industrial and retail park, in Riverside. The 260-acre site is located behind a Missouri River levee at the intersection of Interstate 635 and state Route 9. Work has started on the $12-million first phase, which includes the streets, sewers, lighting, landscaping and other infrastructure needed to support future development, along with 25 acres of lakes and three miles of tree-lined canals. The George J. Shaw Construction Co. is tasked with the earthwork, roads, lakes, canals and building pads, while Kissick Construction will complete the site utilities portion. New Hampshire The New Hampshire Dept. of Transportation has awarded an $81.4-million design-build contract to a team headed by Archer Western Contractors for the Memorial Bridge replacement project. The project includes demolishing the current bridge, a 1,200-ft-long, through truss lift bridge spanning the Piscataqua River between Portsmouth, N.H., and Kittery, Maine. Demolition is expected to begin in January 2012, with foundation work for the new bridge commencing in spring or summer 2012 and the new bridge structures floated into Portsmouth Harbor in winter 2013. North Carolina Phillips Development & Realty LLC has awarded a contract to McShane Construction Co. to build Phillips Mallard Creek, a luxury apartment community. The project entails building eleven three-story buildings, totalling 375,904 sq ft and containing 300 apartments, on a 30-acre site at 655 W. Mallard Creek Church Rd. in Charlotte. The project also includes a swimming pool, sports court, a two-story clubhouse, walking and biking trails, and nine garage buildings. It has been designed by The Preston Partnership LLC, Atlanta. Wisconsin The Wisconsin Historical Society has awarded construction contracts to five firms to build its Visitor Center and Wesley W. Jung Carriage Museum in Greenbush. The project entails constructing a 38,000-sq-ft building that will contain a large room for public and private functions, a classroom, a museum store, a cafe and restrooms. Washington 11/10 The Port of Vancouver is seeking bidders to build the Gateway Avenue grade separation and overpass. The project entails replacing the current access road to Terminals 4 and 5, the county corrections facility and the Subaru facility. The overpass structure will include a three-span concrete-girder bridge and an elevated intersection designed to provide vehicle access across existing and future rail lines. The approach for the bridge and the elevated intersection will be constructed using either sloped embankment fill or, where the footprint of the grade separation needs to be minimized, vertical structural earth walls. California 12/4 The Los Angeles County Housing Authority is seeking qualifications from developers interested in replacing the Jordan Downs housing development, which is located at Grape Street and East 103rd Street in the Watts neighborhood. The project entails building 2,100 new housing units, including 700 units of subsidized housing, 700 units of workforce housing and 700 units of market-rate housing. The project may also include the renovation of Jordan High School as well as a parking garage and retail space. Both Urban Studio and Daniel Solomon Design Partners are conducting the master-planning. Massachusetts 12/13 The Massachusetts Dept. of Transportation is seeking bidders to construct five replacement bridges on state Route 20, otherwise known as Jacob's Ladder Road, in Becket.
