Connecticut Choate Rosemary Hall, a private school, has selected Shawmut Design Group to build the Kohler Environmental Center in Wallingford. The 31,818-sq-ft timber-and-fieldstone building will be constructed northeast of campus on 266 acres of undeveloped land, which will serve as an outdoor lab and classroom. The project is expected to be completed by fall 2012. The building was designed by Robert A.M. Stern. The project goal is LEED Platinum certification. It will be solar-powered and feature energy monitors and other technology to track and conserve energy. The estimated construction cost is $20 million. Hawaii The Hawaii Dept. of Transportation has selected URS Corp. to provide construction management services for improvements to the pavement, signage and lighting of Runway 26L at Honolulu International Airport. New Mexico San Juan County has selected NCA Architects to provide architectural services for a new, 25,000-sq-ft district attorney's office and renovation/expansion of the San Juan County Sheriff's Office. New York The State University Construction Fund has selected Horizon Engineering Associates LLP to provide commissioning services for the three-story, 68,000-sq-ft student union/student activities center at Alfred State College. The project encompasses a rock-climbing wall, a game room with interconnected networks for group video-game playing, student-services offices and a cafe. Ohio Penn National Gaming has selected Smoot Construction to manage the construction of the Hollywood Casino, to be located at 200 Georgesville Rd. in Columbus. The project entails building 180,000 sq ft of gaming space to hold 3,000 slot machines, 70 table games, a steak house, buffet, sports pub, food court and lounge. Oklahoma The Norman Public Schools Board of Education has awarded a $13.6-million contract to Wynn Construction Co. to build a new elementary school. The school, which will be named after former president Ronald Reagan, will be built on 24th Avenue S.E., just off state Highway 9. The project is scheduled for completion in 2013. South Carolina The Oconee County Council has awarded both design and construction management-at-risk contracts for a new detention center in Walhalla. The project entails building a two-story, 64,000-sq-ft, 192-bed facility. Carter Goble Lee has been retained to manage the project as an agent of the county. HOK and Wakefield Beasley & Associates, Norcross, Ga., will serve as the architect, while New South Construction will serve as the construction manager-at-risk. Hawaii 5/9 The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is seeking qualifications for design-build services for the renewal of the historic Schofield Barracks in Honolulu. Required work includes lead-paint abatement and asbestos removal as well as structural upgrades to meet current anti-terrorism and seismic codes. Oregon 5/18 Umpqua Community College is seeking proposals for construction management/general contracting services for a three-story, 57,130-sq-ft Regional Allied Health and Science Center. Arizona 5/30 The City of Scottsdale is seeking qualifications for construction management-at-risk services for a 152,000-sq-ft expansion of the 100,000-sq-ft WestWorld Equidome Equestrian Center. The project includes solar photovoltaic panels; possible use of equine waste to energy; wastewater handling capacity and landscaping/irrigation. The project goal is LEED Gold certification.
