FLORIDA Florida International University is planning to build phase one of the Parkview Housing Project on the Modesto A. Maidique Campus in Miami. The project includes a complex of four-bedroom suites to house 600 undergraduates, four apartments for full-time employees, multipurpose rooms and covered pedestrian walkways. MAINE The U.S. General Services Administration is planning to build the Van Buren Land Port of Entry for the Dept. of Homeland Security’s Customs and Border Protection Agency. The project entails building three one-story buildings, totaling 14,000-sq-ft, as well as 27,000 sq ft of canopies. The project also includes building demolition, railroad track demolition, removal of underground storage tank and roadway construction. The general contractor is J&J Contractors Inc. VIRGINIA Monument Realty has submitted a site-plan amendment to Arlington County for Monument View, a 419,000-sq-ft office complex. The site is a 4.7-acre parcel of land along Old Jefferson Davis Highway between Sixth Street South and 10th Street South in the Crystal City neighborhood. The first phase of the complex, designed by Gensler, includes a six-story, 186,000-sq-ft building and a five-story, 131,000-sq-ft building arranged in an L-shaped plan with a shared central lobby and two-story atrium; a two-level, 550-space parking garage is included below. The second phase includes a four-story, 102,000-sq-ft building with below-grade parking, which will complete the U-shaped plan around a central plaza. James G. Davis Construction Corp. has been chosen as the general contractor for both phases. Construction is expected to begin in late 2011 and be completed in early 2014. ALASKA Ketchikan Gateway Borough has selected Dawson Construction to provide construction management services for the Ketchikan Aquatic Center project and Gateway Recreation Center. The project includes a 34,813-sq-ft complex, an eight-lane main lap pool with a 6,752-sq-ft diving well and a 3,150-sq-ft warm-water pool. The estimated construction cost is $25 million. ARKANSAS The Ozark Mountain Regional Public Water Authority has awarded two contracts totaling more than $16 million to Branco Enterprises for a water treatment plant and nine booster pumping stations. The water treatment plant will produce 4.5 mgd and consist of a 100-ft clarifier, three packaged filter units with associated chemical feed systems, an approximately 750,000-gallon clearwell and backwash lagoons. The booster pumping stations will consist of nine separate pump stations to boost water pressure on the drinking-water system being installed throughout four counties in north-central Arkansas. COLORADO The Metropolitan State College of Denver has selected PSI to provide materials testing services for a new 145,000-sq-ft administrative building. IDAHO Areva Enrichment Services LLC has awarded a contract to the URS Corp. to provide procurement, construction and management services for the Eagle Rock Enrichment Facility. EREF is a planned nuclear-fuel enrichment facility in Bonneville County that will supply low-enriched uranium for use in nuclear powerplants. URS will perform its work in two phases. In phase one, it will provide construction and procurement planning services. In phase two, which will only begin after Areva receives a combined operating license for the facility from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission as well as other approvals, URS will provide procurement, construction and management services. NEW YORK The New York State Dept. of Transportation has selected AECOM USA to provide as-needed construction inspection services for various highway and bridge projects throughout Region 1. NORTH CAROLINA Haywood County Community College has awarded an $8.3- million contract to asbestos Construction to build a creative arts facility. The project entails constructing a two-story, 41,665-sq-ft building to house professional crafts programs and continuing education classes on the Clyde campus. Designed by Innovative Design Inc., the project includes a constructed wetland for on-site asbestos treatment. It also includes radiant floor heating, which uses solar-heated hot water to heat the concrete surface, as well as a photovoltaic system to generate electricity and a solar thermal system for cooling, heating and domestic hot water. TEXAS The Naval Facilities Engineering Command recently awarded a $12.6-million firm-fixed-price contract to Kinley Construction Co. for the construction of a replacement fuel distribution system at Travis Air Force Base. The project will consist of replacing 8-in.-dia and 12-in.-dia buried fuel-transfer pipelines; furthermore, the job also entails electrical upgrades, cathodic protection, construction of a new bulk-storage transfer pump station, installation of new surge tanks, demolition of four facilities and a two-position fillstand. The project entails replacing existing asbestos- cement water mains, including ductile- iron or PVC mains ranging in sizes of up to 16 inches in diameter, and installing a new 500,000-gallon prestressed-concrete ground storage reservoir.
