CALIFORNIA The Emeryville Center for the Arts has selected Jensen Architects to design its new art center. MISSISSIPPI BlueFire Renewables has awarded a $296-million engineer-procure-construct contract to Wanzek Construction Inc. to build a cellulosic ethanol plant in Fulton. The project entails building both the plant, which will produce 19 million gal of ethanol per year, and a biomass powerplant. NEW YORK Tishman Construction has awarded a $2-million contract to Waldorf Holding LLC to demolish the Metals Purchasing Building, located at 30th Street and 10th Avenue in New York City. The demolition of the one-story, 60,000-sq-ft building is expected to be completed by May 2011. This is the first step of site preparation for Hudson Yards, a multibillion-dollar mixed-use master- planned community that will eventually include 13 million sq ft of commercial and residential space. PENNSYLVANIA The Keystone Initiative for Network Based Education and Research (KINBER) has awarded a $118.5-million contract to Sunesys LLC and Blair Park Services LLC to design and install a statewide fiber-optic network. KINBER is a coalition of colleges, health-care organizations and economic development entities. Sunesys and Blair Park Services are both subsidiaries of Quanta Services. The project entails constructing a 1,600-mile fiber-optic broadband network that will connect the state’s institutions of higher learning to national research institutions and networks through a 10-gigabit ethernet service. It will include 13 primary network facilities and approximately 50 secondary locations. This project is funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.
