CALIFORNIA The Long Beach City Council recently approved the environmental impact report for the new Gerald Desmond Bridge. The new cable-stayed, six-lane, 2,000-ft-long bridge will handle higher traffic volumes than the existing four-lane span. The new bridge will be 50 ft higher than the existing crossing, so as to permit the new generation of mega-cargo ships to pass. It will be located 140 ft north of the existing bridge and be delivered via design-build. Construction is expected to begin in 2011 and last for five or six years. INDIANA Delphi Automotive LLP is planning to build a two-story, 100,000-sq-ft laboratory building in Kokomo. The project also includes a powerplant that will heat and cool the laboratory as well as an existing office building. It is being designed by Ghafari Associates. COLORADO The Colorado Dept. of Military and Veterans Affairs has selected RB+B Architects Inc. to provide design services for the Windsor Readiness Center. DISTRICT of columbia The U.S. General Services Administration has awarded Parsons a $3.5-million, seven- year program management contract to coordinate construction and infrastructure development for the Dept. of Homeland Security ’ s St. Elizabeth campus. Parsons will assist GSA in overseeing all phases of design, commissioning, information technology, energy management, community outreach and relocation of DHS headquarters personnel. A consolidated headquarters will be built for DHS, which now operates out of 70 buildings in the Washington area. Most work will take place on St. Elizabeth’s 176-acre West Campus and will entail the rehabilitation and reuse of 52 buildings. The estimated overall project cost is $3.4 billion. UTAH Dannon Co. has selected MWH Constructors to design and build a multi-million dollar wastewater pretreatment system for its West Jordan plant.
