CALIFORNIA The Long Beach City Council recently approved the environmental impact report for the new Gerald Desmond Bridge. The new cable-stayed, six-lane, 2,000-ft-long bridge will handle higher traffic volumes than the existing four-lane span. The new bridge will be 50 ft higher than the existing crossing, so as to permit the new generation of mega-cargo ships to pass. It will be located 140 ft north of the existing bridge and be delivered via design-build. Construction is expected to begin in 2011 and last for five or six years. INDIANA Delphi Automotive LLP is planning to build a two-story, 100,000-sq-ft laboratory building in Kokomo. The project also includes a powerplant that will heat and cool the laboratory as well as an existing office building. It is being designed by Ghafari Associates. COLORADO The Colorado Dept. of Military and Veterans Affairs has selected RB+B Architects Inc. to provide design services for the Windsor Readiness Center. The project includes a 30,715-sq-ft facility with an assembly hall, classrooms and learning center, recruiting office, family support center, and equipment and weapons storage. COLORADO Mesa State College has selected Shaw Construction to provide CM/GC services for a new multistory, 300-bed student housing facility. The project may include the development of utility distribution systems and possible vacating of public right-of-way and easements. The estimated construction cost is $18 million. DISTRICT of columbia The U.S. General Services Administration has awarded Parsons a $3.5-million, seven- year program management contract to coordinate construction and infrastructure development for the Dept. of Homeland Security s St. Elizabeth campus. Parsons will assist GSA in overseeing all phases of design, commissioning, information technology, energy management, community outreach and relocation of DHS headquarters personnel. A consolidated headquarters will be built for DHS, which now operates out of 70 buildings in the Washington area. Most work will take place on St. Elizabeth’s 176-acre West Campus and will entail the rehabilitation and reuse of 52 buildings. The estimated overall project cost is $3.4 billion. FLORIDA Volusia County has selected Schenkel & Shultz to provide design services for a new 45,000-sq-ft emergency operations center, including law enforcement, fire and emergency medical dispatching, and living facilities. ILLINOIS Instituto del Progreso Latino has awarded a $13-million contract to McShane Construction Co. to build the Instituto Health Science Career Academy at 2520 S. Western Avenue in Chicago. The project entails partial interior demolition of an existing 77,280-sq-ft warehouse and factory building as well as 23,610-sq-ft of new construction. The completed three-story high school is expected to achieve LEED Silver certification. The Resurrection Project, a community-based non-profit organization, is serving as the owner’s representative. NEW york The New York State Dormitory Authority has selected Architecture Plus to provide architectural and engineering services for the rehabilitation of Building No. 8 and No. 17 of the Hutchings Psychiatric Center in Syracuse. The project includes new windows and roofing, HVAC systems, communication systems and asbestos abatement. The project goal is LEED Silver certification. NORTH carolina Boral Composites Inc. has awarded an $11-million design-build contract to Science Applications International Corp. to build a manufacturing facility in East Spencer. The work will be performed by SAIC’s wholly owned design-build subsidiary, The Benham Companies LLC. The plant will produce a line of exterior building products made primarily from recycled and rapidly renewable materials. The project is expected to be completed by June 2011. UTAH Dannon Co. has selected MWH Constructors to design and build a multi-million dollar wastewater pretreatment system for its West Jordan plant. The primary treatment system will be a moving-bed bioreactor combined with dissolved-air flotation; it will be designed to meet discharge requirements while handling a flow of several hundred thousand gallons per day. HAWAII 11/22 (request for qualifications) The Hawaii Dept. of Transportation is seeking qualifications for construction management services for the Elliot St. Terminal Modernization Program at Honolulu Airport. The project includes demolition of the 623,000-cu-ft Aloha Air cargo building and installation of approximately 81,000 sq ft of 16-in.-thick hardstands and airfield lighting.
