COLORADO The University of Colorado Hospital is planning an expansion of the Anschutz Medical Campus in Aurora. The project entails a new 12-story, 260-bed building containing 660,000 sq ft of space, as well as the renovation of 60,000 sq ft of existing space. The expansion includes new operating rooms, a larger emergency department, diagnostic and treatment facilities and additional office space. It also includes two new parking structures, containing a total of 2,300 spaces. The expansion is expected to cost $400 million. HAWAII The National Solar Observatory (NSO) is planning to build the Advanced Technology Solar Telescope (ATST) on Mount Haleakala on the island of Maui in Hawaii. ATST will be the largest solar telescope in the world. NSO has awarded the design contract for the telescope enclosure to AEC Engineering, which is part of the IDOM group. The ATST enclosure will be a 143-ft-tall structure designed to protect the telescope assembly; it will include a variety of mechanical subsystems to enable the structure to point, track and slew. INDIANA AIT Laboratories is planning to move its headquarters into a new facility in Indianapolis as well as build a new toxicology lab. After some upgrading, the headquarters staff will move into an existing 90,000-sq-ft building in the Woodland Corporate Park. The company also plans to construct a new 60,000-sq-ft toxicology laboratory adjacent to the headquarters, to house AIT Bioscience. Construction management is being handled by the Paul Kite Co. The toxicology lab’s first of two phases will start construction in October 2010 and entail 20,000 sq ft; it is expected to be complete by spring 2011. ARIZONA Hunter Contracting has been selected by the City of Mesa to provide construction management-at-risk services for the widening of Mesa Drive between U.S. Route 60 and Southern Avenue. CALIFORNIA EnergySource has chosen Performance Mechanical Contactors to build the Hudson Ranch One geothermal powerplant. The 49-MW geothermal flash steam plant will be built on a 65-acre site near the Salton Sea and Niland. Construction is expected to cost $399 million and be completed by spring 2012. FLORIDA Merlin Entertainments Group has awarded PCL Construction Services Inc. the design-build contract to build the Legoland theme park in Winter Haven. This fast-track project is being constructed on the 125-acre former Cypress Gardens site and comprises both new construction and renovations of more than 80 structures, including 12 restaurants, three roller coasters, 15 flat rides and two water rides. The project also includes extensive, heavily themed hardscape, water features, landscaping of 50 acres and the installation of new park-wide utility systems. RHODE ISLAND The Naval Facilities Engineering Command has awarded a $38.2-million contract to Absher Construction Co. to build officer training command quarters at Naval Station Newport.
