CALIFORNIA The Naval Facilities Engineering Command is planning to build a new naval hospital at U.S. Marine Corps Base, Camp Pendleton. The 511,000-sq-ft building will be located on Vandegrift Avenue near the base’s Oceanside Gate. The project also includes a 1,500-vehicle, multilevel parking structure and associated development of access roads. The design-build project is expected to start construction in October 2010 and be completed by 2014. DELAWARE The University of Delaware has acquired the former Chrysler assembly-plant property in Newark and plans to redevelop the site as a research and technology campus adjacent to the existing campus. The plant site is 272 acres and contains 3.8 million sq ft of buildings, consisting of the plant, a paint shop, a wastewater treatment plant, a powerhouse and support structures. INDIANA-KENTUCKY The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet and the Indiana Dept. of Transportation jointly plan to replace the 80-year-old Milton-Madison Bridge superstructure carrying U.S. 421 across the Ohio River and connecting Madison, Ind., with Milton, Ky. The 3,117-ft long steel-truss bridge will be 40 ft wide, curb to curb—with two 12-ft lanes and 8-ft shoulders. The existing bridge is only 20 ft, curb to curb. The new bridge also will have a 5-ft-wide sidewalk. The new truss will be built atop the existing piers, which will be modernized. The project will be delivered via design-build, with the contract awarded in early October. Construction will take about 24 months, with the bridge expected to close to traffic in the fall of 2011. Contractors will be permitted to close the bridge to traffic for a maximum of 12 months. A free ferry service across the Ohio River will be offered while the bridge is closed to traffic. CALIFORNIA The San Francisco Public Utilities Commission has awarded a $226.6-million contract to a joint venture of Southland Contracting Inc. and Tutor Perini Corp. to build the New Irvington Tunnel. The tunnel will provide a seismically upgraded connection for bringing water from the Sierra Nevada Mountains and the Alameda watershed to Bay Area distribution systems. The 3.5-mile-long tunnel will have an internal diameter of between 8.5 ft and 10.5 ft and will parallel the existing tunnel between the Sunol Valley south of I-680 and Fremont. This project is part of the SFPUC’s $4.6-billion Water System Improvement Program to upgrade the aging Hetch Hetchy system. FLORIDA The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has awarded a joint venture of Flad Architects and ccrd partners a contract to execute the design-build bridging documents for the Air Force Technical Applications Center Headquarters at Patrick Air Force Base.
