CALIFORNIA The Naval Facilities Engineering Command is planning to build a new naval hospital at U.S. Marine Corps Base, Camp Pendleton. The 511,000-sq-ft building will be located on Vandegrift Avenue near the base’s Oceanside Gate. The project also includes a 1,500-vehicle, multilevel parking structure and associated development of access roads. The design-build project is expected to start construction in October 2010 and be completed by 2014. This project is funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act and is estimated at $563 million. DELAWARE The University of Delaware has acquired the former Chrysler assembly-plant property in Newark and plans to redevelop the site as a research and technology campus adjacent to the existing campus. The plant site is 272 acres and contains 3.8 million sq ft of buildings, consisting of the plant, a paint shop, a wastewater treatment plant, a powerhouse and support structures. Demolition specifications have been prepared by Conestoga-Rovers & Associates. The university expects to select a demolition contractor shortly. INDIANA-KENTUCKY The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet and the Indiana Dept. of Transportation jointly plan to replace the 80-year-old Milton-Madison Bridge superstructure carrying U.S. 421 across the Ohio River and connecting Madison, Ind., with Milton, Ky. The 3,117-ft long steel-truss bridge will be 40 ft wide, curb to curb—with two 12-ft lanes and 8-ft shoulders. The existing bridge is only 20 ft, curb to curb. The new bridge also will have a 5-ft-wide sidewalk. The new truss will be built atop the existing piers, which will be modernized. The project will be delivered via design-build, with the contract awarded in early October. Construction will take about 24 months, with the bridge expected to close to traffic in the fall of 2011. Contractors will be permitted to close the bridge to traffic for a maximum of 12 months. A free ferry service across the Ohio River will be offered while the bridge is closed to traffic. CALIFORNIA The San Francisco Public Utilities Commission has awarded a $226.6-million contract to a joint venture of Southland Contracting Inc. and Tutor Perini Corp. to build the New Irvington Tunnel. The tunnel will provide a seismically upgraded connection for bringing water from the Sierra Nevada Mountains and the Alameda watershed to Bay Area distribution systems. The 3.5-mile-long tunnel will have an internal diameter of between 8.5 ft and 10.5 ft and will parallel the existing tunnel between the Sunol Valley south of I-680 and Fremont. This project is part of the SFPUC’s $4.6-billion Water System Improvement Program to upgrade the aging Hetch Hetchy system. FLORIDA The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has awarded a joint venture of Flad Architects and ccrd partners a contract to execute the design-build bridging documents for the Air Force Technical Applications Center Headquarters at Patrick Air Force Base. This $158-million MILCON project includes a four-story, 276,000-sq-ft command-and-control center and a one-story, 38,000-sq-ft radiochemistry laboratory, plus an 18,000-sq-ft central utility plant and a 180,000-sq-ft/600-car parking garage, all on an 11.5-acre site. FLORIDA The University of Florida has selected Moses & Associates to provide total building commissioning services for the 39,000-sq-ft Institute on Aging Clinical Translational Research Building. TEXAS The Ector County Hospital District has selected Hardin Construction Co. LLC to provide construction management-at-risk services for the Medical Center Hospital—Center for Women and Infants & Mechanical Plant Project. The project consists of installation of pedestrian areas and landscaping improvements to the Emergency Dept. entrance, a 92,000-sq-ft three-floor addition, 11,000 sq ft of renovations and a central mechanical-plant expansion, including the removal of the existing engineering-shops area, the addition of a 4,200-sq-ft chilled water plant and rooftop cooling towers. UTAH The City of Salt Lake City has selected GSBS Architects to provide design services for a new public safety complex. The project includes a 132,000-sq-ft public administration building, an associated underground parking structure and a 35,000-sq-ft emergency operations facility. WASHINGTON Snohomish School District has selected Dull Olsen Weeks Architects to provide design services for a new aquatic center to replace the Hal Moe Pool. The new 35,000-sq-ft to 45,000-sq-ft facility will be located at the Maple Avenue campus and include a diving area, a recreational pool and wellness pool, as well as dressing areas, an office and classroom. WEST VIRGINIA The U.S. General Services Administration has awarded a $37-million contract to Grunley Construction Co. Inc. to build a two-story, 51,600-sq-ft expansion of the Internal Revenue Service Enterprise Computing Center (ECC) in Kearneysville. CALIFORNIA 7/15 The City of Tulare is seeking proposals for construction management and inspection services for the upgrade and expansion of the Tulare wastewater treatment plant. The project includes new headworks, new primary and secondary aeration basins, new blower and electrical buildings, a gravity-belt sludge thickener and anaerobic sludge digester. This design-build project entails replacing two deteriorating piers at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard in Portsmouth with a single ship repair pier. It will involve demolition of the existing piers and buildings and construction of a new pier 1,225 ft long and 230 ft wide. It also includes replacing existing bulkhead berths with a new low-level relieving platform with mechanical and electrical shore-tie stations. It also includes a saltwater pump-station building and a 40-gauge portal crane rail track. This project is valued at between $100 million and $250 million.
