CONNECTICUT Developer Ponemah Riverbank LLC is planning to convert a historic cotton mill located in Taftville into apartments. In the first phase, the bulk of the five-story, 430,000-sq-ft Ponemah Mills building, erected in 1865, will be converted into 235 market-rate apartments, totaling 290,000 sq ft. Some units on the fourth and fifth floors will be duplexes with 14-ft ceilings and mezzanines. Tocci Building Cos. will be the the general contractor. OHIO SunCoke Energy recently received air-permit approvals to build a $360-million coke oven facility in Middletown. Per year, the plant will produce 550,000 tons of coke, which will be sold to AK Steel under a long-term contract. The project includes a 46-MW cogeneration plant, which is being built on a 157-acre plot off Yankee Road. McGraw/Kokosing is the general contractor. TEXAS Parkland Memorial Hospital is planning to build a replacement building on a 26-acre site across from the present hospital on Henry Hines Boulevard. It will be 17 stories and contain 2 million sq ft, with 862 beds and 120 neo-natal intensive-care-unit bassinets. The project will include 4,000 parking spaces: 2,000 in a garage and 2,000 at-grade. The new hospital was designed by two architectural firms, HDR and Corgan. The general contractor, BARA, is a joint venture of Balfour Beatty, Austin Commercial, H.J. Russell and Azteca Enterprises. Construction is expected to begin in November 2010 and be completed in 2014. The estimated construction cost is $1.2 billion. CALIFORNIA Mill Valley School District has selected DLM Architects to provide design services for the new Edna Maguire Elementary School. The project includes the replacement of an existing facility with a new campus of classrooms, administration offices, a library, a gymnasium and covered outdoor eating and learning areas. CALIFORNIA Pleasant Hill Recreation and Park District has selected Critical Solutions Inc. to provide overall project and construction management services for the new, 23,000-sq-ft Community Center, a 22,000-sq-ft Senior Center, a 6,000-sq-ft Teen Center and an upgrade to Pleasant Oaks Park restrooms. FLORIDA The City of Gainesville has awarded Skanska a $49-million construction management-at-risk contract to build the Gainesville Regional Utilities Eastside Operations Center. Sited on 120 acres, the center will comprise nine buildings totaling 260,000 sq ft and aims to achieve LEED Silver. Besides offices and a hurricane-hardened data center, the campus will include equipment service spaces, warehousing, a fueling station and training areas. TENNESSEE The U.S. Dept. of Energy has awarded a $16.8-million contract to Safety and Ecology Corp. for environmental cleanup operations at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. SEC will demolish and dispose of 34 facilities that had previously been used to support reactor operations and activities. In addition, SEC will remove materials from inside five other buildings and six radioisotope thermoelectric generators. This project is funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. WISCONSIN WE Energies has awarded a $255-million contract to The Boldt Co. to build a 50-MW biomass cogeneration plant in Rothschild. The plant will be built at the Domtar paper mill and will use wood waste to produce electricity.
