ALASKA NorthWind Architects has been selected by the city and borough of Juneau to provide planning, design, construction administration and special inspection services for renovations to Gastineau Elementary School in Douglas. The project includes renovation of 5,250 sq ft to provide for a central commons area, larger kitchen capacity and numerous small-group learning spaces. The work will address building code deficiencies, energy maintenance, Americans with Disability Act code compliance and hazardous materials abatement. The project is valued at $12 million. ARKANSAS James Construction Group, LLC, has been awarded two contracts worth a total of $34 million by American Electric Power for construction work at the John W. Turk Jr. Unit 1 Power Plant, located in Fulton. One contract is for site development, which entails excavation and embankment work and the installation of drainage culverts. It is expected to be completed by December 2010. The second contract entails building 4,000 ft of railroad track, a 212-ft-long overpass concrete-girder bridge that will realign state Highway 195 over the new tracks, and resurfacing a portion of County Road 49. CALIFORNIA RBF Consulting has been awarded a maximum $20-million firm-fixed-price, indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity architect/engineering contract for civil engineering services by the Naval Facilities Engineering Command. The work to be performed includes engineering design, studies and site investigations to support new development on raw land or redevelopment of existing developed sites; preparation of request for proposals for design-build projects; fully designed plans and specifications for invitation for bid projects; other civil engineering analysis, reports, cost estimates and evaluations; preparation of facility planning documents; support services, including incidental surveying, geotechnical, structural, cost estimating and environmental engineering services. Work will be performed at various Navy and Marine Corps facilities and other government facilities in the NAVFAC Southwest area, including California (87%), Arizona (5%), Nevada (5%), Colorado (1%), New Mexico (1%) and Utah (1%). Work is expected to be completed by January 2015. CALIFORNIA Nova Partners Inc. has been selected by the city of Gilroy to provide construction management services for the replacement of the existing Gilroy Library. The new, 53,500-sq-ft facility will be located at Sixth and Rosanna streets. The project is intended to earn LEED certification. The project is valued at $37 million. MISSISSIPPI Granite Construction Co. has been awarded a $22.4-million contract by the Mississippi Dept. of Transportation for the demolition of the U.S. 82 Greenville Bridge in Greenville. The project includes demolition and removal of the 2.25-mile steel through-truss bridge that spans the Mississippi River. Granite will also perform grading and asphalt paving for the roadway leading to the replacement bridge completed earlier this year by MDOT. The project is expected to be completed by September 2012. MISSOURI KCI Construction Co. has been awarded a $20.7-million firm-fixed-price design-build contract by the Naval Facilities Engineering Command to renovate three three-story barracks, a dining hall and a battalion headquarters building at Fort Leonard Wood. NEBRASKA Anderson Excavating Co., Omaha, Neb., was awarded a $7.9-million firm-fixed-price construction contract by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for the Western Sarpy Levee Improvement Project, Segment 3, on Platte and Elkhorn rivers in Sarpy County. NORTH CAROLINA Bristol Construction Services LLC, Anchorage, Alaska, was awarded a $17.5-million contract by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to repair/upgrade the access rail line and on-post rail system, increasing turning radiuses and track gauges, at the Military Ocean Terminal, Sunny Point, located at Southport.  The project is expected to be completed by March 2012. TEXAS Barsh Co. has been selected by the Waco Independent School District to provide construction management-at-risk services for new construction and renovation projects throughout the district. The projects include a new one-story, 82,000-sq-ft Dean Highland Elementary School; cafeteria additions and renovations at Mountainview Elementary School; renovations at Waco ISD Early Childhood Center; locker-room improvements at Tennyson Middle School; a new physical education building at Parkdale Elementary School; and HVAC, lighting and ceiling upgrades at the administration building. This design-build project entails financing, design, construction and 10 years of operation of a demonstration waste-to- energy recycling facility. The facility will convert municipal solid waste to produce a marketable product such as synthetic gas, bio-fuel or electricity using gasification, anaerobic digestion or a similar technology. TEXAS SAK Construction LLC has been awarded a $31.9-million contract by the city of Austin to construct the 3.5-mile downtown wastewater tunnel project. The project, which will be managed by Austin’s public-works department, entails building an 18,600-ft-long wastewater relief tunnel. The shaft design calls for a variance in diameter from 8 to 10 feet, which will accommodate sewer pipe ranging from 54 to 96 in. in diameter. The project is expected to be completed by March 2012.
