Planning WISCONSIN The state Dept. of Plan Distribution is planning to build a 72-bed skilled-care facility to serve primarily veterans and their eligible dependents. The facility will consist of four skilled-nursing households of nursing stations and dining areas, as well as a central area that includes a chapel, library, business offices, food service and supply rooms. The facility will be located on the campus of the Northern Wisconsin Center for the Developmentally Disabled, in Chippewa Falls. The project is valued at $15.8 million. ALABAMA BE&K Building Group, a unit of KBR, has been awarded a $47-million construction-management contract by the U.S. General Services Administration for a new U.S. federal building and courthouse in Tuscaloosa. The 129,000-sq-ft building is located on a 4.75-acre site on University Boulevard between 20th and 21st streets. The project is expected to be completed by late 2011. Its overall cost is $67 million. CALIFORNIA Clark Design/Build of California has been awarded a $430.8-million contract by Alameda County for the Highland Hospital Acute Tower replacement. The project’s first phase entails a three-story, 78,000-sq-ft medical office building atop a 176-space parking structure. Phase two entails a 9-story, 169-bed acute care tower. Phase three will involve demolishing the existing tower and building connecting structures. The project is expected to take seven years. CALIFORNIA Kadena Pacific Inc. has been selected by the Dept. of Veterans Affairs to provide design-build services for a 45,000-sq-ft pre-engineered building complex at the Palo Alto Health Care Center’s Menlo Park campus. FLORIDA Ajax Building Corp. has been selected by the University of North Florida to provide construction-management services for the new science and humanities building. The 105,000-sq-ft building will include teaching and research laboratories, administrative offices, classrooms and a rooftop greenhouse. The project’s goal is to achieve LEED Silver certification. FLORIDA Perkins + Will has been selected by Florida International University to provide architectural/engineering services for the Robert Stempel College of Public Health and Social Work, Miami-Dade County Health Dept. and the Ambulatory Care Center on the Modesto A. Maidique Campus. The college of public health and social work will comprise 62,704 sq ft, including site infrastructure. The county health department building includes 98,960 sq ft of teaching labs and offices. The ambulatory care center will include 20,896 sq ft for family medicine and primary care, sports medicine, imaging center and administrative support spaces. MARYLAND Costello Construction has been awarded a $10.5-million design-build firm-fixed-price contract by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.  This contract is for a two-phase design-build project for a new National Museum of Health and Medicine, to be built at Forest Glen Annex, Md.  The museum currently resides at Walter Reed Medical Center, Washington, D.C., which is scheduled to close.  The project is expected to be completed by April 2011. CALIFORNIA 2/3 U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, dam control structure. The Folsom Dam auxiliary spillway control structure is a reinforced-concrete gravity structure about 150 ft high. The structure will comprise two 89-ft-wide independent flow-through monoliths flanked by three solid monoliths. Each flow-through monolith will house three 24-ft x 34-ft submerged tainter gates. Each of the tainter gates will have its own steel bulkhead gate and hoist assembly. The project entails excavation to final grade, mass concrete placement, and procurement and installation of the submerged tainter gates and bulkhead gates. This project is funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act and is valued between $100 million and $250 million.
