ARIZONA Kitchell Development Co. has received approval from the city of Mesa’s planning and zoning board to proceed with developing the Gateway 202 Airpark, a mixed-use development. The airpark will occupy a 230-acre site just south of the Loop 202 Santan Freeway, adjacent to Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport. Initially, Kitchell expects to create an office park, along with a hotel. At first, some buildings may be built as two-story structures, but will be constructed on foundations that will support additional stories to be added on in the future. The developer expects the airpark to eventually grow to 3.3 million sq ft of office, industrial and shopping space over 10 or 20 years. KENTUCKY The Kentucky Division of Engineering & Contract Administration is planning to replace the Glasgow state nursing home facility. The new 100-bed, 65,000-sq-ft project will be built on the grounds of the existing home in Glasgow. Design bids have been submitted, and selection is possible in late 2009, with construction expected to begin in fall 2010. The project is valued at $20 million. VIRGINIA Developer Ed Walker plans to renovate the vacant 13-story Patrick Henry Hotel, located on South Jefferson Street in downtown Roanoke. Initial efforts will include asbestos abatement and repairs to patch and stabilize a leaky roof. Walker plans to convert most of the 84-year-old hotel into apartments, as well as office space, a restaurant, a coffee shop and 22,000 sq ft of storage space. ARIZONA Granite Construction Inc. has been awarded a $22-million contract by the Gila River Indian Community to build the final phase of the 8.5-mile Santan Canal, located 40 miles southeast of Phoenix. The project includes earthwork, concrete lining and the construction of 35 reinforced-concrete structures. It also includes construction of a reservoir, and excavation of 344,000 cu yd of borrow. CALIFORNIA Harper Contracting Inc. was awarded a $16-million firm-fixed-price contract by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for improvements to the lower Santa Ana River Channel in Orange and Riverside counties. The project consists of excavation and backfill for the construction of 5,200 ft of 24-in.-thick grouted stone revetment as well as 1,000 ft of steel sheet pile, excavation and backfill of a 5,000-ft-long temporary diversion channel. COLORADO Colorado State University has selected 4240 Architecture to provide design services for improvements to Parmelee Hall and Braiden Hall on the CSU campus at Fort Collins. The project entails renovations to the three existing floors, and fourth-floor additions containing between 120 and 160 beds. COLORADO GEI Consultants Inc. has been awarded a $1.26-million contract by the Colorado Water Resources and Power Development Authority and the La Plata Water Conservancy District to perform engineering services for the Long Hollow Dam and Reservoir, located 22 miles southwest of Durango. The contract covers design of the 900-ft long, 125-ft high dam, outlet works, and emergency spillway. The total project cost is estimated at $18.5 million. GEORGIA The McCarty Corp. was awarded a $16.3-million firm-fixed-price contract by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for the west-wing renovation/restoration of the 518,799-sq-ft Building Four at Fort Benning. The building systems scheduled for renovation include plumbing, HVAC, electrical, ceilings, walls, doors, flooring, windows, roof and parking. MAINE Cianbro Corp. has been awarded a $19.5-million firm-fixed-price contract by the Naval Facilities Engineering Command for caisson and sill repairs to Drydock 2 at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Kittery.  The work to be performed includes construction of a temporary cofferdam to allow demolition and reconstruction of the sill structures, the addition of rock anchors and dowels to existing sill and wing walls in order to stabilize them in dewatered condition, phased demolition of existing sill structures, including caisson sill armoring, and construction of a reinforced-concrete sill structure with two seats, anchored to the bedrock with rock anchors. The project is expected to be completed by October 2010. MISSISSIPPI Caddell Construction Co. Inc., in joint venture with Yates Construction, has been awarded a $175.7-million design-build contract by the Federal Bureau of Prisons for a new federal penitentiary in Yazoo City. Designed to house 960 inmates, the 582,000-sq-ft high-security facility will comprise six two-story buildings, as well as a Federal Prison Industries factory. NEW JERSEY Great Lakes Dredge & Dock Co. LLC was awarded a $16-million firm-fixed-price contract by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for dredging work.
