ARIZONA The Tucson City Council voted to proceed with the development of the Sheraton downtown convention center and hotel. The 25-story, 525-room hotel will feature 36,000 sq ft of meeting and exhibition space, a bar and lobby lounge, spa, fitness center, cafe, outdoor pool deck and a business center. A 1,160- space parking structure is to be constructed, and a 55,000-sq-ft expansion will be built on the adjacent existing convention center. DLR Group will provide architecture and engineering services, with design-build services by Turner Construction and Sundt Construction. CONNECTICUT Dewberry-Goodkind was selected by the town of New Haven as the prime designer for a replacement bridge on Sackett Point Road over the Quinnipiac River. The existing, structurally deficient bridge will be replaced with a new structure that will include a raised deck and roadway levels to meet current Federal Emergency Management Agency flood-plain elevation benchmarks. The bridge will have a wider design to handle increased traffic and expanded capacity to carry utilities. Related work will include rebuilding of approaches and realignment of the roadway to reduce environmental impact. The project is estimated at $12 million. SOUTH CAROLINA Walton Construction was awarded a $19-million option on an existing contract for recruit barracks at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot in Parris Island. In addition to the three-story, 68,000-sq-ft, 528-bed barracks, the option includes construction of a physical training circuit. The barracks facility will be the fourth that Walton Construction builds at the Recruit Depot under its contract, bringing the total value to $78 million. VIRGINIA RW Armstrong and Archer Western Contractors have been awarded a contract for the design and construction of the Presidential helicopter hangar at Marine Corps Base Quantico. The 65,000-sq-ft facility will house Presidential Helicopter Squadron HMX-1, as well as hangar space for an adjacent multistory maintenance shop and administrative, medical, storage and support areas. The contract also calls for 540,000 sq ft of new airfield taxiway and apron pavement. The contract is valued at $39 million and work is expected to be completed by March 2011. WASHINGTON The City Council of Sammamish awarded a contract to Ceccanti Inc. for roadway reconstruction of 244th Avenue in Sammamish. Work includes widening the roadway and the construction of a bridge to connect 244th Avenue between 8th St. and 3rd Place.
