ARIZONA A contract for roadway reconstruction and widening of state Route 202 in Phoenix was awarded to a joint venture of Kiewit Corp. and Sundt Construction, with URS Corp. serving as lead engineer. The project calls for additional lanes to be added in both the eastbound and westbound directions between Interstate 10/state Route 51 and state Route 101L. This also will require the widening of 19 existing bridges. Other work includes ramp reconstruction, sound walls, drainage and traffic-signal modifications. FLORIDA Parsons Brinckerhoff was awarded a contract by the Florida Dept. of Transportation for the construction of a replacement bridge over the Indian River in Brevard County. The A. Max Brewer Bridge on state Route 406 is a low-level, swing-span bridge that serves as the main link to the Merit Island Wildlife Refuge and the Canaveral National Seashore. It will be replaced with a 2,715-ft-long, two-lane, high-level, fixed-span bridge that also will traverse several parks and a boat launch. Fishing piers will be constructed at both ends of the bridge, which also will have a viewing area for nearby NASA launches. FLORIDA Timothy Haahs & Associates was recently selected to provide design and structural-engineering services for four parking structures to be located at the site of the new Florida Marlins Ballpark in Miami. The parking facilities will provide a combined 4,800 spaces and are only a part of the $525-million stadium plan. The contract also covers parking for the extensive retail space and residential units to be located on the site. Work on the new ballpark complex is expected to be completed in April, 2011. NEW JERSEY Ferreira Construction has been selected by New Jersey Transit to build a railroad underpass at Tonnelle Ave. in North Bergen. The $13.6-million effort is the first construction contract awarded for a new commuter-rail tunnel linking northern New Jersey and Manhattan. The $8.7-billion tunnel under the Hudson River will contain two commuter rail tracks and involve 21,000 ft of tunneling. Other contracts related to the tunnel project will be advanced later this spring, with completion estimated for 2017. NEW YORK Turner Construction Co. was selected by the New York School Construction Authority to manage construction for the new settlement community campus in the Bronx. Two four-story buildings will provide classroom and activity space for grades 1-12, as well as a cafeteria, gymnasium, library and administrative offices. The campus will be built to the authority’s green standards, which encourage the recycling of construction waste and use of local building materials, among other things. TEXAS Ledcor Construction has been awarded a firm fixed-price contract by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Little Rock District for the design and construction of a commissary at Fort Bliss. The two-story, 120,000-sq-ft building will provide spaces for general sales, seating, a receiving area and loading-dock and preparation areas. The work also includes mechanical, ventilation, refrigeration support system and assorted site improvements. The cost is about $20 million. Ledcor Construction Inc., 901 N.
