CALIFORNIA URS Corp. was selected by Naval Facilities Engineering Command, Southwest, to provide a National Environmental Policy Act documentation for a new naval hospital at the Marine Corps Base in Camp Pendleton. A contract had originally been awarded to URS Corp. to support construction of the hospital to get under way in 2012, but funds from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act were allotted to complete NEPA documentation by 2010. This is the final installment of the $267-million set-aside in the 2010 budget for school construction in the state and brings the state’s total investment in school construction over the last three years to more than $1 billion. The money was raised through the sale of state bonds and will be used to replace or repair Maryland’s aging K-12 public school system. CALIFORNIA Turner Construction Co. was selected to provide design-build services for the airline terminal expansion at San Diego International Airport. Turner also will manage construction as part of a joint venture that includes Flatiron Corp. and PCL Construction Services Inc. The 470,000-sq-ft expansion of Terminal 2 includes the construction of a three-story, 10-gate terminal, as well as approximately 1.5 million sq ft of new taxiway and jet parking. The expansion project is currently estimated at $500 million. The project is aiming for LEED Silver certification and is expected to be completed in 2012. CALIFORNIA Straub-Martin, a joint venture of Straub Construction and Martin- Harris, has been awarded a $92-million firm-fixed-price contract by the Naval Facilities Engineering Command, Southwest, for the design and construction of three U.S. Marine Corps barracks facilities at the Marine Corps Air-Ground Combat Center at Twentynine Palms. Each barracks will house 384 personnel and will contain standard facilities. The contract also covers the construction of a parking structure adjacent to the buildings. The contract contains three options which, if exercised, would bring the total contract value to $102 million. Work is expected to be completed by April 2011. FLORIDA Suffolk Construction was awarded a contract for the construction of the Atlantic Village Hotel & Marina complex in Dania Beach. The hotel will be located on a 10-acre site at the intersection of Interstate 95 and Griffin Road. The project will include a 12-story, 130,000-sq-ft, reinforced-concrete-frame hotel with 419 suites and a 80-boat-slip marina. Work will also include the construction of a five-story, 500-space parking structure adjacent to the hotel. Construction is set to get under way this month and work is expected to be completed in late 2011. The project is currently estimated at $150 million. GEORGIA Benham Construction, a subsidiary of SAIC, was awarded a $20.6-million firm-fixed-price contract for the design, site preparation and construction of a one-story, multibay cargo aircraft hangar building at Robins Air Force Base in Warner Robins. The hangar will have a concrete foundation and floor slab, structural-steel frame and masonry walls with an insulated metal roof. Work covers interior office spaces for personnel, installation of an overhead crane system, concrete aprons, HVAC and related utilities. Completion is set for April 2011. Benham Construction, 9400 N. KANSAS Koss Construction Co. has been awarded a $64.2-million contract by the Kansas Dept. of Transportation for a roadway expansion of State Route 61 in McPherson County. This is the first construction contract awarded by KDOT that is funded by the department’s share of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act and is part of a 10-year comprehensive transportation construction program. The project calls for State Route 61 to be expanded to four lanes from two. Koss had been awarded a $41.1-million contract for the expansion to four lanes of State Route 61 in adjacent Reno County, and together the two projects cover a 23.1-mile stretch of the road. KANSAS A joint venture of Walton Construction Co. and Balfour Beatty Construction was awarded a contract by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to provide preconstruction services for a new $334-million hospital to replace the 50-year-old Irwin Army Community Hospital at Fort Riley. The project will consist of a 263,000-sq-ft hospital building and a 289,000-sq-ft clinic, as well as a central plant, ambulance garage and support facilities. Additional features include special foundations, parking facilities and assorted site improvements. The project is seeking LEED Silver certification. NEW YORK Callanan Industries Inc. was awarded a $14.9-million contract by the City of Albany for road renovation and repair on Delaware Avenue in Albany. Work is already under way, making the project the first in the state to begin construction funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. The project covers a 1.6-mile span of Delaware Avenue from Madison Avenue in Albany to the bridge linking Albany to Delmar. VIRGINIA Archer Western Contractors was awarded a firm-fixed-price contract by the Naval Facilities Engineering Command, Washington, D.C., for the design and construction of an aircraft maintenance hangar at Marine Corps Air Facility in Quantico. The Greenside Hangar Complex will have a 60,000-sq-ft hangar designed to accommodate current CH-53 helicopters and future MV-22 aircraft. Additional work includes a multistory maintenance shop, as well as administrative and storage areas. The contract also covers construction of an aircraft taxiway and parking apron. WASHINGTON Mission Support Alliance, a joint venture between Lockheed Martin, Jacobs Engineering Group and Wachenhut Services, was selected by the Dept. of Energy to serve as mission-support contractor at the Hanford site in Richland. The mission support contractor will provide a wide range of services at the nuclear waste remediation and cleanup site. Work covered by the contract includes site infrastructure and utilities, safety, security and environmental work, as well as assorted administrative and information management services. The $3.06-billion contract has a 10-year period of performance, with a five-year base contract and two option periods for the remaining five years. The contract is the last of three major contracts awarded for the cleanup of the Hanford site as part of the Dept. of Energy’s new strategy for the project. The contract calls for the removal of 21 aging bulk storage tanks at the Craney Island Fuel Terminal in Portsmouth. The tanks will be replaced with four 100,000-barrel tanks for jet fuel, and two smaller tanks for fuel-oil reclaimed products. The new tanks will be above-ground pile-supported vertical-cylinder type, with welded steel-wall construction, fixed roofs and sloped bottoms. Work will include removal of contaminated soil from the site, new tank foundations and new piping systems. Contract is estimated at between $25 million and $100 million. The contract also calls for the construction of new rapid-mix facilities, as well as the relocation of wastewater piping and sulfuric-acid feeds. Related work includes installation of pumps, construction of yard piping, chemical trenches, electrical duct banks and piping connections. The fivestory, 182,000-sq-ft structural-steel-frame building will contain 14 courtrooms: five criminal, six civil and three lower. There will also be 54 holding cells built to Dept. of Corrections standards. A memorial green is also to be built adjacent to the courthouse. The project’s total valuation is currently estimated at between $113.5 million and $118.5 million, with separate contracts for the core, shell, mechanical, electrical and plumbing components. All new buildings and additions will be designed to match the surrounding setting. The first contract will cover construction of the U.S. Coast Guard headquarters.
