ALASKA Transcanada Corp. has awarded URS Corp. a contract to provide studies and conceptual design work for a natural-gas treatment plant to be located in Prudhoe Bay. The plant would process residual gas from an existing central gas facility. The contract calls for the Washington division of URS to conduct preliminary front-end engineering and design services for the project, with environmental and regulatory support from the main URS division. CALIFORNIA Straub Construction Co. has been awarded a $25-million firm- fixed price order by the Naval Facilities Engineering Command, Southwest, under a multiple-award construction contract for the rehabilitation and renovation of two military instructional buildings at the Naval Post Graduate School in Monterey. The first five floors of Building 232, Spanagel Hall, and the first two floors of Building 235, Root Hall, will undergo repairs and renovation to their floors, mechanical systems and fire sprinkler systems, as well as assorted interior renovation. MICHIGAN The Mich. Dept. of Transportation has awarded a contact to Parsons Brinckerhoff to design the reconstruction of the Interstate-64/I-94 interchange in Detroit. PB will be responsible for the concept and final designs, overall project management as well as constructibility reviews. The project involves the complete replacement of the entire interchange, including four miles of freeway and eight bridges. Other work on the project will includes concrete pavement, geotechnical improvements, culvert replacements and replacement of signage and guard rails. OREGON Hatch Mott MacDonald was awarded a contract by the Tri-County Metropolitan Transportation District of Oregon to provide preliminary engineering and consultant services for the Portland- Milwaukie Light Rail Project, East Segment. The 7.3-mile light-rail extension will run from 8th Ave. in Portland and continue to the Park Ave. station in Clackamas County. Hatch Mott MacDonald will serve as lead consultant with a project team of 16 subconsultants to provide preliminary engineering, light- rail trackway design, traffic design, structural and geotechnical engineering and related design services. TENNESSEE The Tennessee Valley Authority has awarded a $292-million contract to URS Corp. to provide engineering, procurement, construction, startup and commissioning services for the upgrade of generating capacity at the Gleason Combustion Turbine Plant in Weakley County. The project, to be completed over a three-year period, is designed to shift the plant from peaking to intermediate usage. It calls for an additional 360 MW of generating capacity to the 540-MW plant, and will involve the construction of a new steam turbine block and the conversion of the plant to combined- cycle operation. Work is to be completed by the Washington division of URS Corp. Construction is to begin in 2010, and completion is scheduled for November 2011. This contract is to be executed under URS’s Washington division’s long- term agreement with the TVA to build combined-cycle and simple-cycle gas- turbine projects. VIRGINIA The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Norfolk District, has selected Tompkins Builders, a wholly owned subsidiary of Turner Construction Co., to manage construction of the $90-million Training and Doctrine Command Headquarters (TRADOC) at Fort Eustis in Newport News. The project consists of a two-story, 264,000-sq-ft structural- steel frame headquarters and a 18,000-sqft band building facility, as well as assorted site work. The facility is being designed to seek LEED Silver certification. Green features will include an EnergyStar-approved roofing system, 30%-reduced water usage through low-flush toilets and waterless urinals, and the recycling of 75% of construction waste. COLORADO 5/20 (design-build) U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Omaha District, 1616 Capitol Ave. Omaha, Neb. 68102, military physical fitness facility. Construction of the physical fitness facility at Fort Carson will begin with the natatorium. The facility will eventually also include a fitness area, gymnasium, locker rooms, administrative areas, laundry room and storage spaces. Related work includes integration with fire alarm systems. The project is expected to pursue LEED certification, and is currently estimated at between $20 million and $30 million. FLORIDA 5/20 Florida Dept. of Transportation Contracts Division, 605 Suwannee St., Mail Station 55 Haydon Burns Building, Tallahassee, 32399, bridge replacement. The project calls for the replacement of bridge no. 610008 on State Route 79 in Vernon. The bridge will have four lanes to accommodate the planned widening of State Route 79 through the town of Vernon. The new bridge will be constructed west of the existing bridge and will also feature two pedestrian sidewalks and new traffic signals to accommodate the widened roadway. ILLINOIS 5/20 Village of North Aurora, 25 E. State St. North Aurora, 60542-1689, police station. ALABAMA 5/21 University of Alabama, Huntsville, 4701 University Dr, NW, Huntsville, 35899-0100, residence hall with dining facility. The new, five- story, 165,000-sq-ft residence hall at the University of Alabama, Huntsville, will contain 400 beds. The one-story, 8,500-sq-ft dining facility will have a capacity of 100 persons. This is the second bid package on the project, covering the construction of the residence hall and dining facility. The first package covered earthwork and the foundation.
