MINNESOTA/WISCONSIN Parsons Brinckerhoff has been selected by the Minnesota Dept. of Transportation and the Wis. Dept. of Transportation to provide concept design and related services for the $200-million St. Croix River Crossing. The span will connect Stillwater, Minn., to Houlton, Wis., and serve as a link between Trunk Highway 36 in Minnesota and WIS 64 in Wisconsin. The bridge will be a segmented concrete structure with 3,460-ft of extradosed river spans and 1,580-ft of approach spans in Minnesota. It will have 40-ft-wide roadways as well as a 12-ft pedestrian trail. The bridge will have seven towers and spans of roughly 480 ft each. The new bridge replaces a historic lift bridge. Work under the design contract includes development of design criteria, concept and architectural drawings, foundation options as well as cost estimates. TEXAS URS Corp. was selected by the University of Houston to program, plan and prepare a design concept for a wind-turbine-blade testing facility to be built on the Texas Gulf Coast. The project is the result of a cooperative research and development agreement among the Dept. of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory, the University of Houston and the members of the Lone Star Wind Alliance. The facility will be built in multiple phases on a 22.8-acre site and will be capable of testing blades ranging from 70-m to 100-m long. It will have test stands for blades of various lengths and diameters, preparation areas for assembling test- and data-collection equipment, hydraulic and mechanical pulley-testing systems, as well as workshops and spaces for offices and support operations.
