MASSACHUSETTS The city of Boston has received a proposal from Raymond Property Co. to demolish the 11story Government Center Garage located between New Chardon and New Sudbury Streets and build two office towers, 42 and 52 stories tall, in its place. At 710 ft, the taller of the two towers would be one of the tallest buildings in Boston. The project would involve over 3 million sq ft of development space and would also include a hotel, condominiums and retail space. The developer has selected design firm Cook + Fox as architect, and the redevelopment plan’s cost is estimated in the submitted proposal at $2.3 billion. Bids/Contracts/Proposals

MINNESOTA The Minnesota Dept. of Transportation has announced the first round of lowest bids for road and bridge projects funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. The 11 projects are part of the batch of 60 state highway projects totaling $180 million that MnDOT announced in February. The bids announced total approximately $40 million, and involve both mill and overlay of roads as well as guardrail replacements and new signage on highways and bridges. Low-bidding firms include Knife River Corp. and Ulland Bros. Inc. Estimated start dates range from May to September of this year. NEVADA Martin Harris Construction was awarded a $42-million contract for the construction of two new firehouses on the Nevada Test Site by the National Nuclear Security Administration and National Security Technologies. One firehouse will be located in the restricted test site town of Mercury and the other will be about 22 miles north of Mercury, on the test site grounds. VIRGINIA Construction & Cabling Specialists has been awarded a $17.5million indefinite-delivery, indefinite-quantity contract by the Naval Facilities Engineering Command Mid-Atlantic for construction maintenance, repairs and upgrades to federal facilities in the Hampton Roads region. VIRGINIA Whiting-Turner Contracting Co. was awarded a $55.5-million contract by the city council of Alexandria for the construction of a new police headquarters. The 124,000-sq-ft, four-story facility will provide room for up to 502 staff members, with a parking lot for 550 vehicles. The project’s total cost is estimated at $81.1 million, and the builder is expected to seek LEED-Gold certification for the structure. Work is currently set to begin in April. NEW YORK 3/31 New York City Dept. of Transportation-Fiscal Affairs Contracts, 40 Worth St. Rm 824A, New York, 10013, shore belt bridge replacements on the Rockaway Parkway in Brooklyn. The estimated $75-million project covers the replacement of the parkway bridges over Paerdagat Basin, Rockaway Parkway and Fresh Creek Basin. MASSACHUSETTES 4/1 Dept. of Conservation and Recreation, 251 Causeway St., Boston, 02114-2148, bridge rehabilitation. The Craigie Draw Bridge and Dam Bridge over the Charles River between Leverett Circle, Boston and O’Brien Highway, Cambridge, is structurally deficient and is in need of significant work. The bridge serves about 40,000 cars per day, and was last replaced in 1963. The dam structure is no longer operational for water-control purposes and will not be reactivated as part of this project. Phase IIa of UC Boulder’s Williams Village project calls for construction of a residence hall with facilities for 500 students. The hospital project at the University of Kentucky calls for an expansion of approximately one million sq ft. This bid package covers the core and shell of the expansion, with a 490,000-sq-ft fit-out for existing hospital elements and 510,00 sq ft to be shelled for future fit-out and use. Under an earlier bid package, an existing parking garage is to be demolished to make way for the new expansion.
