CALIFORNIA Turner Construction Co. was given approval by Northern Inyo Hospital to proceed with the $42-million phase two of a hospital expansion project. Phase two includes a new central plant, emergency rooms, ICU, CCU, three operating rooms and 26 patient rooms in a new two-story, 56,000-sq-ft facility.Construction will begin in March 2009 and is scheduled for completion in March 2011. Turner had managed the $12.7-million first phase of Northern Inyo Hospital’s expansion project, which was completed in March 2008. It included a radiology laboratory and support facility. DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA The joint venture of Columbia Enterprises/Forrester Construction has been awarded a $10-million design-build renovation contract for the interior of the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in Washington, D.C. The project involves the conversion of existing spaces into an additional 40,000-sq-ft of meeting space and the installation of folding partitions to allow for more flexible use of space, as well as the relocation of existing office spaces. FLORIDA Hensel Phelps Construction Co. was awarded a $121-million firm fixed-price contract by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Mobile, Ala., District, for construction of the new FY09 Special Forces Complex at Eglin Air Force Base, Fla. The work includes clearing, grubbing, earthwork and erosion control on a 350-acre containment site and 130-acre access road, and construction of a road system, electrical and communications distribution, water wells, elevated storage tanks, water distribution system, wastewater collection system and storm-drain systems. Buildings will include a group headquarters, 4-Battalion headquarters/company operations facility, combat readiness training facility and a dining facility. FLORIDA The Tampa Port Authority has approved a $13.3-million contract with Manhattan Construction Co. for the design and construction of a parking-garage expansion at Channelside in Tampa. NEW HAMPSHIRE Jacobs Engineering was awarded a contract by the Dept. of Justice, Federal Bureau of Prisons, to provide construction management services for a new medium-security federal correctional institution in Berlin, N.H. NEW JERSEY The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New York District, has awarded Don Jon Marine Co. a $31-million firm fixed-price contract for dredging and deepening the existing 47-ft mean low water Federal Navigation Channel System to a depth of 52-ft. The project consists of dredging and disposal of non-rock as well as possible drilling, blasting, dredging and disposal of rock. TEXAS Sundt Construction Inc. was awarded an $87-million contract for design and construction of an unaccompanied enlisted-personnel housing barracks at Fort Bliss.
