CONNECTICUT Tecton Architects Inc. was selected by owner-developer AI Engineers to designed their new $40-million technology center, which will replace the former WFSB Broadcast Center located at Three Constitution Plaza in Hartford. The 12-story glass, metal and concrete tower will consist of 10 floors of office space and two floors of retail space, including a 250-seat auditorium and underground parking. The progressive AI Tech Center is designed to achieve a LEED Platinum rating, which includes a high-performance building with energy-conservation features such as rooftop solar panels, a rooftop garden, and a system for collecting and recycling rainwater. FLORIDA The Broward County Commissioners and the Housing Finance Authority have approved $98 million in tax-exempt bonds for construction of nearly 1,000 low- to moderate-income housing units in Hollywood, Fort Lauderdale, North Lauderdale and Pompano Beach. Gatehouse Group will receive $14 million in bond financing and will need to come up with the remaining $15 million for the proposed development of the 120-unit Gardens at Driftwood in Hollywood. Chesapeake Community Advisors will receive $7.5 million to acquire and renovate 96 units at the Broward Gardens Apartments in Fort Lauderdale. Nearly $35 million in bond financing will go to Cornerstone Development and Management Services, which must fund an additional $22 million to build a new 360-unit complex known as Captiva Cove in Pompano Beach. Cornerstone also proposes to construct a 420-unit development, to be called Tuscany Village, located in North Lauderdale. They have requested $41.3 million in bond money and will need to come up with an additional $25 million for this $66.6-million project. MINNESOTA The Economic Development Board recommends approval of a tax increment financing application from Knute Nelson for the Knute Nelson Senior Living Campus to be located at Pioneer Rd., adjacent from the proposed high school site in Alexandria. Pope Associates Inc. was selected to design the proposed project, which consists of construction of a 205,000-sq-ft, 133-unit senior living campus, including independent senior apartments, assisted living senior apartments, wellness center and resident community spaces. The total cost of the project is estimated at $24.9 million. Further progress is pending action after the city council’s public hearing held in December 2008. NEW YORK Trammel Crow Residential is seeking all necessary approvals and permits for a proposed project to raze an old hotel and construct a new four-story, 150-unit apartment building, known as Alexan@West Hempstead, with two levels of underground parking, landscaped courtyard, clubhouse and pool located in the Village of West Hempstead. Plans call for razing the old Courtesy Hotel on Hempstead Ave. after the town adopts zoning that would pave the way for construction of apartments geared to young commuters next to the Long Island Rail Road train station. Once all necessary approvals and permits are received, the hotel will be razed sometime in 2009, and construction of the apartment building could take approximately 18 months to complete. OREGON CSHQA has been awarded a contract to design a regional training academy, offices, and general aviation terminal at the Grand County Regional Airport in John Day. The $5.1-million project is a joint venture of Grant County and USFS-Malheur National Forest, which includes an 18,762-sq-ft multi-use terminal building that is targeted for LEED Silver certification, and will include a helicopter rappelling training station, a new helicopter-landing pad and classroom facilities. CALIFORNIA Harper Construction Co. has been awarded a $114.5-million contract by the U.S. Naval Facilities Engineering Command for the design and construction of five bachelor enlisted quarters at Marine Corps Base, Camp Pendleton. CALIFORNIA Santa Paula Water LLC, a company formed by Pacific Environmental Resources Corp. and Alinda Capital Partners LLC, was awarded a contract by the City of Santa Paula to design, build, operate and finance a new state-of-the-art 3.4-million-gallon-per- day water recycling facility, which will be expandable to 4.2 mgd and replace its existing wastewater treatment plant. With cost estimated at $70 million, this is the first design-build-operation-finance facility being built under California’s new regulations encouraging private investment to solve public infrastructure needs. ILLINOIS Groundbreaking ceremonies were recently held for a new 90,000-sq-ft computing facility for the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and the National Center for Super Computing Applications. Clayco is providing construction-management services and will construct the facility to achieve LEED certification. OKLAHOMA Flintco Constructive Solutions has been selected as program manager and general contractor and WorthGroup Architects was selected to design the new Choctaw Casino Resort, a new casino and hotel on the Choctaw Nation’s property in Durant. The casino will provide 3,143 slots, various table games and a variety of dining options.
