Gilbane Building Co., the Providence, R.I.-based global builder, has elevated President Michael McKelvy to the additional role of CEO, effective on Jan. 1, the firm said on July 6. Now chief operating officer, he will succeed Thomas F. Gilbane Jr. in that role, which he has occupied since 2008. Gilbane remains chairman of the building company and CEO of Gilbane Inc., a holding company for that unit and Gilbane Development Co.
McKelvy joined Gilbane as president and COO in 2014, following a 26-year career with CH2M. He was the 142-year-old contractor's first non-family member—who also is a company outsider—in those leadership roles.
Gilbane's current CEO told ENR in 2014 that McKelvy's management experience will aid the building firm in its federal and international businesses. He says the firm now works in 15 countries, with a current volume of about $4 billion.
Gilbane recently was elected chairman of the Construction Industry Round Table Board, a group of industry CEOs, and he is chairman of the ACE Mentor Program of America.
Steve Quigley, a former Conestoga-Rovers principal, was named general manager of GHD North American operations, akin to Wankmuller's role. The firms, with a total of 8,500 global employees, on July 1 said they have completed their integration.
Granite Construction, Watsonville, Calif., has tapped Robert J. Beekhuizen, a former top Fluor executive, as senior vice president of construction and materials. He had been that contractor's divisional president of global construction and fabrication operations, as well as its vice president of construction in Canada. Beekhulzen also had been a vice president and director of construction for Flint Energy Services, later acquired by URS Corp., and served as a senior project manager for Husky Energy for work in planning and executing a multibillion-dollar capital program at Fort MacMurray, Alberta.
David Nichols, former director of the Missouri Dept. of Transportation, has joined Parsons Corp. as vice president and transportation program director. He is an immediate past director of the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials and vice chairman of its standing committee on performance management for state DOTs.
Susan L. Hayes has joined Forest City Ratner Cos., the Brooklyn, N.Y., developer-builder, as president of its modular division, responsible for running its modular construction practice. She had been president and CEO of Cauldwell Wingate Co., a New York City-based construction management firm, where, in 2007, she also founded 5Elements West, which manufactures construction products for large-scale development projects, says Forest City. Hayes also is a former director of New Jersey Transit and Nontraditional Employment for Women.
