Kalavritinos
Jack Kalavritinos will join the national ACE Mentor Program as CEO, as of Feb. 1. The Washington, D.C.-based group links professionals in architecture, engineering and construction with high-school students who are mentored to pursue STEM academic courses and industry careers. Kalavritinos was global government affairs director at Covidien, a health-care products firm. ACE's 67 U.S. chapters now have 2,200 mentors, who have worked with almost 8,000 students.

New York City-based engineer STV has hired Jon Miller as executive vice president and head of its buildings and facilities division. He was senior vice president and regional business line leader at AECOM Technlogy Corp. in Washington, D.C.

George J. Pierson, former president and CEO of global design firm Parsons Brinckerhoff, has launched The Pierson Advisory Group, a New York City-based consulting firm that "advises and assists senior executives in removing obstacles to success," it says. He left PB in December after shepherding its sale last fall to WSP Global, Montreal, for nearly $1.4 billion, about three times its value when he became CEO in 2010. Pierson also was named a 2014 ENR Newsmaker for launching the Engineering Success Alliance at Bucknell University, a unique mentoring program for engineering students from under-resourced high schools. The first ESA class graduated last year.

RECOGNITIONS

The National Academy of Engineering awarded to Simon Pitts and Michael B. Silevitch of Northeastern University, Boston, the 2015 Bernard M. Gordon Prize for Innovation in Engineering and Technology Education, worth $500,000, on Jan. 8.

They are cited for innovation in engineering leadership development.

Pitts is director of the school's Gordon Engineering Leadership Program, a graduate degree and certificate program in leadership skills for practicing engineers. Engineering professor Silevitch, who created the program and was its first director, now is lead student mentor.

Gordon, a Danvers, Mass., digital technology entrepreneur, endowed the prize in 2001. He also had provided $20 million to Northeastern in 2007 to launch the leadership program and gave it $10 million more last November to create the school's Gordon Institute of Engineering Leadership.

The prize is split between the recipients and the university.
