Robert L. Shaw Jr., a vice president and board member of Detroit-based engineer-architect SmithGroup and director of its Dallas office Smith Group/F&S, died on Dec. 2 of pancreatic cancer. He was 56.

Shaw joined the firm in 2009 following its acquisition of Dallas-based F&S Partners, of which he had been president. Shaw assumed that role in 2008 after 30 years with the firm. He also was the former president of the American Institute of Architects’ Dallas Chapter in 1993 and served in leadership roles in the Texas Society of Architects and the Dallas-Fort Worth chapter of the Council for Educational Facilities Planners International.

Bernard S. “Bernie” Lee, 75, former president of the Institute of Gas Technology and an authority on fossil-fuel conversion technologies and synthetic fuels development, died Nov. 7 of lung cancer in Sun Lakes, Ariz. Lee was the group’s CEO from 1978 until retirement in 1999. A year later, it merged with the Gas Research Institute to become the Des Plaines, Ill.-based Gas Technology Institute, the research and technology advocate’s current name. Lee also served as an energy adviser to the Chinese and Malaysian governments and was promoting development of massive electricity storage technology to the renewable-energy industry, particularly solar and wind developers.
