Ronaldo "Nick" Nicholson: VDOT's $7-Billion Man

Aileen Cho met Ronaldo "Nick" Nicholson two years ago while touring the Virginia side of the $2.5-billion Wilson Bridge project. Despite tough life situations, his discipline and talent has led him to become VDOT's first-ever manager of megaprojects.

Virginia Dept. of Transportation (VDOT) Commissioner David S. Ekern has tapped Ronaldo T. "Nick" Nicholson, P.E., to lead the coordination of major construction and public-private projects for Northern Virginia.

Nicholson will oversee and coordinate more than $7 billion in major construction projects, including:

  • I-95/395 HOV/Bus/HOT lanes
  • I-495 Capital Beltway HOV/Bus/HOT lanes
  • Woodrow Wilson Bridge Project
  • The I-94 Fourth Lane Widening Project
  • VDOT's involvement in the Dulles Rail Project
  • He holds a Masters degree in structural engineering from George Washington University and a BS in civil engineering from the University of Kansas. Besides publishing numerous papers, Nicholson has also received honors that include a Commissioners Award for Outstanding Achievement and a Governor's Team Award in 2006. In addition, he is a proud Life Member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc. He was named a 2006 Modern-Day Technology Leader by the editors of US Black Engineer & Information Technology magazine.
