Joseph R. Byrne: Major League Construction

Posted: 7/9/2007

Joseph R. Byrne, 41, grew up in the Bronx dreaming of someday playing at Yankee Stadium. Today he's living that dream as project executive for Turner Construction co., the lead contractor for the new stadium the Yankees are building across the street from the House that Ruth Built. Andrew Wright spent a day with Bryne in June of 2007, 10 months into the job. Byrne talks about the challenges of the biggest job in Turner's New York City portfolio, dealing with the Yankees and the residents of the South Bronx neighborhood.

Project Executive
Turner Construction

Joseph R. Byrne worked on two signature Manhattan high-rise buildings in the past decade: the Bear Stearns headquarters and the Hearst Tower. Each job attracted plenty of attention and added to Byrne's resume. But those were just buildings. For Byrne, a diehard Yankee fan and lifelong Bronx resident, the Yankee Stadium project is the high point of his 18-year construction career. From Lehman High School and the State University of New York Maritime College at Ft. Schuyler to the big ballpark in the South Bronx, Byrne is proving that few things are more satisfying than achieving excellence in your own backyard.
