All in a Day’s Work? Try One of These Jobs!

Tudor Van Hampton

What may be all in a day’s work to one industry professional can be pretty dramatic to others—and pretty fascinating to ENR’s journalists. We continue to be amazed by the kaleidoscope of construction and decided that one way to capture it was to literally spend a day in the life of people in the industry. Sixteen journalists trailed 16 professionals on 16 days.

Some of the journalists shadowed subjects at wild hours or at high elevations. Equipment Editor Tudor Van Hampton met his foundation contractor at 4 a.m. to escort a trucker delivering a giant steel casing to the site in downtown Chicago. Europe Correspondent Peter Reina worked the night shift shadowing the manager of a huge expansion to the London Underground. Transportation Editor Aileen Cho strapped on climbing gear and followed her aerial inspector up the roof of baseball’s Miller Park. And Business Editor Debra Rubin made the long climb up to the cab of a 320-ft-tall Manhattan tower crane to spend the day with its operating engineer.

The grit and glory that we discovered is captured partly in this print edition (see p. 25) and then expanded on ENR.com, with longer stories in some cases, podcasts in others, and slide shows in many more.
