Wipeouts and Cranes Down
Our video aggregator, Clip Syndicate, pulled in a story about cranes coming down on a big Texas Department of Transportation project in the San Antonio area near the airport early on the morning of April 1st. The story about the accident that ran on WQAI in San Antonio mentioned two cranes but didn't name the contractor. "I'm told that crews were lifting beams for the 281/410 overpass," said the reporter.
Another web story, Crews Clean up Roadway after Crane Collapse, doesn't mention contractors either but says crews worked overnight.
No one was injured because traffic had been stopped, but this appears to have been a big, dangerous mistake that sent tons of crane boom crashing and may have also lost control of the crane load.
More on contractor wipeouts, the subject of the cover story on this week's web-only issue of ENR.
One of many interesting aspects of the FMI report on why contractor's fail are the quoted comments from the people interviewed by FMI that epitomized the attitudes that lead to trouble. "We'll make it happen and show them what we're made of," is my favorite. Look at the story to see three more. You can find out how to contact FMI at FMInet.com.
I mentioned in my last blog that the assets of Boston's fastest growing contractor in the 1990s, Modern Continental, had been bought out several years ago by Jay Cashman Inc. Although this is what was announced at the time, Jay Cashman's Dale Pyatt called to say that the deal was never made and that his company worked only as a consultant to Modern Continental's surety finishing the contractor's projects.
