Tips for Online Success

Attila Toro/Fotolia.com

Despite late adopter traditions, contractors are getting comfortable with the Internet (you did find this blog after all.). Even if your web presence consists of a simple "brochure" website today, you can bet that the Internet will play a much larger role in your business soon. Here we outline four primary ways in which you can make more extensive use of the Internet starting today.

  1. Web-based project management software. Keep owners, subs and your team up to date through web-based collaboration. Several online construction project management systems are capable of integrating with your website. These systems provide centralized tools for project managers and contractors to communicate project schedules, specifications, and requirements.
  2. Internet plan rooms. Services such as McGraw-Hill's Dodge or iSqFt's Internet Plan Room offer online platforms for sharing plans, managing bids and collaborating with owners and subs. Bonus: on-line takeoff tools integrate to produce faster quantities as well as fewer plans to print (that's good for the earth).
  3. Construction web cams. Companies such iBEAM Systems and OxBlue offer on-site cameras that record the progress on job sites. If your managers are stretched thin by too many projects, web cams will allow you to monitor the performance of several job sites without having to leave the office. More importantly, owners will love the ability to monitor progress from any web browser.

Staking your claim in the online world does not have to be overwhelming. By getting in early, you’ll find yourself reaping the benefits before the rest of the industry.

Have any more ideas for online success? Be sure to send them our way.
