Global Best Project Winner, Sports/Entertainment: BC Place Revitalization

Text size: A A
----- Advertising -----

Vancouver's BC Place, built in 1983 and home to the 2010 Olympic Games, needed a new retractable roof. Key roof components came from three continents. Mast sections were fabricated in Thailand during blockades and political unrest. A volcanic eruption in Iceland delayed airfreight from Europe and the tsunami in Japan disrupted shipping in the Pacific.

The project team, led by PCL Constructors Westcoast Inc., worked with more than 150 consultants, subcontractors and suppliers from 20 countries to ensure on-time delivery of components, tracking fabrication and procurement using 3D models. The $514-million, 18-month project finished $49 million under budget, in time for the Canadian Football League's 2011 championship game.
