More than 10,000 buildings, comprising over 300,000,000 sq ft of wall area, are erected annually using tilt-up concrete construction. Thanks to David L. Kelly, vice president, Meadow Burke Products, Sacramento, those numbers could grow exponentially as larger and more varied projects become possible, thus saving construction time and money and improving jobsite safety.
Kelly overcame bracing and lifting issues when he collaborated with Tiltcrete LLC, Medley, Fla., to design and place two record breaking 96.6-ft tall, 120,000-pound stair tower panels as part of an 800,000 sq ft parking garage in Hollywood, Fla. The mammoth panels, which are almost 20-ft taller than the previous concrete record holder, were formed on site and lifted into place by a 150-ft lattice boom crane with jib using 75-ft-to-100-ft slings.
