In a role that tackled the first U.S. project to build light rail and expand a highway in the same alignment, Kiewit Corp. project manager W. H. (Bill ) Murphy led a team in doubling the results. He balanced the demands of two owners and the public with the construction of a light rail system plus a highway-widening job in Denver. Utilizing the wisdom and experience garnered from previous major design-build jobs, Murphy led a team of Kiewit and Parsons Transportation Group to successful completion of a $1.7-billion T-Rex project, which featured the building of 17 miles of new light rail and the expansion of 17 miles of Interstate 25 simultaneously in the same footprint — a feat unique in the U.S. The team pledged to finish the job 22 months earlier than the original date. It completed the job six weeks earlier than that, and handled an owner-requested $125 million in additions while value-engineering $2 million more in savings.
