Segmental construction has less environmental impact in Otay Valley.
In an era of tight budgets and even tighter environmental requirements for transportation projects, transportation consultant Peter Gipps came
up with a computerized system that is saving the sanity and dollars of
dozens of agencies. The system of Quantm Pty. Ltd., recently acquired by
Trimble Navigation Limited, Sunnyvale, Calif., analyzes data from
multiple sources to identify alignment alternatives and estimated costs,
and help to identify cost savings in days, not weeks. On the 16-mile
Foothill Transportation Corridor-South project, using Quantm reduced
impact to wetlands from 107 acres to 49 acres on one alternative and
saved 32 homes from displacement on another. The Final alignment was
chosen in 2006 with construction anticipated for 2008-2009. Examples
like these abound throughout the U.S. and the world.
