Ethics Initiative Open to All

The letter from Stephen Rohrbach, president of the American Subcontractors Association, expressed the mistaken impression that the new Construction Industry Ethics and Compliance Initiative (CIECI) limits its membership to general contractors only.

It signals that we have not done a good job of explaining that the organization is open to and welcomes all parts of the construction industry. The initiative is open to all responsible companies that design and build projects, including architect-engineers, general contractors and subcontractors.

At the CIECI best practices forum in Washington, D.C., on Oct. 16-17, we will present a session on how to establish an effective ethics and compliance program at minimal cost. This session will be especially valuable to smaller companies and subcontractors.

What is critical to becoming a CIECI member is that the CEO personally commit the company to adopt and follow the group's six ethics and compliance principles.

For more information, please see our website, www.ciecinitiative.org.

Correction

The story “Rapid Response Bolsters Structures at Risk of Collapse” reported erroneously that workers on the tail water weir for a spillway in Florida had filled eight sheetpile cofferdam cells with sand in two weeks of work.

The story should have said that the design of the weir was modified during two weeks of intense work in order to replace the proposed earthen embankments with eight sand-filled cofferdam cells.

Clarifications

The photo used for the story “U.S. Navy About to Pump Up Guam Megabuild Contracting” depicts construction at the Andersen Air Force Base Exchange on Guam, a $35-million, design-build project to be completed this fall by CDM, Cambridge, Mass. The 184,000-sq-ft shopping center is being delivered under contract to the Air Force Center for Engineering and the Environment. Andersen AFB is the base of operations for the U.S. Air Force in the Pacific Rim, and serves about 8,000 military, civilians, reservists, family and retirees.

The Workforce Solutions feature “Video Technology Connects Distant Jobsite to Iowa State Construction Classroom, inaccurately referenced the name of the contractor involved. It is JE Dunn Construction Group, Kansas City.
