Ohio Department of Transportation engineers are examining an Interstate 74 bridge that was struck by a tractor trailer the night of May 20 and severely damaged.

 The eastbound Interstate 74 bridge at I-275 was damaged when a tractor trailer carrying an 80-ton train engine slammed into three of the bridge’s support columns, knocking out two and seriously damaging a third column, says a spokeswoman for the  Ohio Department of Transportation.

“We’re looking at 60 to 90 days to repair the bridge,” she says. An initial repair estimate put the damage at about $500,000 to $600,000

The bridge currently is resting on the locomotive. The train can’t be moved until supports are placed under the bridge, and the bridge is jacked up to free the train. An emergency contract for the work has not been awarded yet, and repairs should begin within the next couple of days.

The bridge is a four-span continuous steel beam structure with reinforced concrete deck that is 44 feet wide and 260 feet long. About 28,000 vehicles used the bridge daily, prior to the accident.
