A $170-million reconstruction of Interstate 70 in Indianapolis has been completed two years ahead of schedule. The fast-tracked project, which included seven separate contracts, shifted a 4.5-mile stretch of the highway about 1,000 ft southward to allow room for new runway construction at Indianapolis Airport (ENR 5/26/03 p. 20). The project included 3 million cu yd of earthmoving, rebuilding of an interchange and new ramps that will take traffic directly into the airport.
