Alaska voters overwhelmingly
passed a ballot measure Tuesday creating the Alaska Natural
Gas Development Authority as a public corporation, giving
the state the power to buy North Slope gas and build a pipeline
to move it to market. Actual construction of a pipeline through
Alaska, however, still hinges on the support of the gas industry,
which has said the project may not be economically feasible.
Ballot Measure 3, approved with 61% of the vote, gives the
new agency authority that includes "buying property or taking
it by eminent domain, and to issue tax-exempt revenue bonds."
The proposed pipeline would run from Prudhoe Bay to Prince
William Sound rather than along the Alaska Highway, which
is the route favored by Democratic Gov. Tony Knowles and Gov.-elect
Frank Murkowski, a Republican.
