DATA CENTERS
Cooling Tower Aims Air at the Problem

The size of servers and routing devices has been shrinking, but power use and heat generation have soared, leaving building systems scaled to support rooms full of equipment straining to handle data centers that are now mostly empty space.

Addressing the problem, RTKL, a Baltimore, Md.-based architectural and engineering firm, has patented the Tower of Cool, an equipment rack that delivers chilled air to devices inside the cabinets and vents heated air back to the data room's air conditioning unit. Professed savings include a 14% reduction in cooling costs, a 6 to 10% drop in energy consumption and a 50% reduction in the number of AC units required.

RTKL's manufacturing partner is APW-WriteLine, Worcester Mass. Information is at www.wrightline.com.
