Cause Sought for Power Failure That Put 2.5 Million in the Dark

“An intensive investigation of all aspects” of a Feb. 26 afternoon power outage is under way in Florida, says Armando J. Olivera, president of Florida Power & Light Co. Little was known at ENR press time about the cause of the outage, which began at 1:08 p.m. with an equipment failure at a substation in western Miami-Dade County, Olivera says. He estimates about one million customers, or 2.5 million people, may have been affected between Miami, Daytona and Tampa. Half were not FPL customers, he adds. Most power was restored within an hour.
